So the songs for tonight's ep of Smash are available on itunes. Comments:

Redneck Woman- The Gretchen Wilson song, done by Katharine Mcphee. Hey, I've always been a big fan of the song, and this seems to be a straight up cover. The best song of the ep, ha!

Grenade- Bruno Mars, as done by Will Chase. I've never been keen on this song, its just too much, its like we get it Bruno, you'll do anything for that chick. This is a rock version, and I don't know what the guy is doing here, but it comes off extremely hammy.

Mr and Mrs Smith- The original song of the ep. I'll give the show this, their songs for the Marilyn Musical definitely sound like Broadway songs.

TV commentary:

Once Upon a Time- Ha, they're really milking the Disney connection here. Regina giving Henry "Space Paranoids" (from Tron) to play? Which is fine, though given the Disney bent, it makes the references to the non-Disney stuff seem kinda weird. I mean, King Midas, and then last week having a mental institution containing people who look a hell of a lot like Nurse Ratched and the Chief?

But wow, David/Charming is kinda a douche in the "real world". So he finally breaks it off with Kathryn, but instead of saying its because he's in love with Mary Margaret, he cowardly claims that they're just not connecting. So Kathryn is sad, but gets pissed when Regina tells her (actually innocently, this time) he's been seeing MM. So, Kathryn confronts MM in front of everyone, slapping her in the face and airing out their dirty laundry. So, now MM is a social pariah, and even Granny is all, "You should be ashamed!"

But eventually Kathryn gets over it and writes a letter to David giving them her blessing. Unfortunately, since Regina is supposedly her friend in the real world, she tells this to the mayor. Who is pretty pissed, though she doesn't show it to her friend. So, she breaks into David and Kathryn's house (apparently she has a keychain to everywhere in Storybrooke) and steals and burns the letter.

In the fairy tale land, the story is of how Abigail doesn't want to marry Charming either, because she's in love with someone else, Fredrick, who was turned to gold protecting her father from an assailant (having pushed Midas out of the way and touching him in the process). So, in thanks for Abby's help, Charming quests to get some magical water that will free Freddy from the curse. And it works! Heh, as for his real world counterpart, was it any surprise it was the random guy they showed bumping into Kathryn when she confronted MM at the school?

Walking Dead- What was up with the ending to last night's ep. It seemed very "chicks, man!" First, you have Andrea feeding into Shane's growing psychosis and stroking his ego how he's better than Rick or Herschel. Then you have Lori tell Rick she thinks Shane is unhinged and thinks the baby is his and wants her. I mean, her speech seemed less like, "I'm worried he's a crazy man" (well, it still kinda was), but her words to Rick seemed very, "This is going to totally blow up in our faces and put you and me and Rick in danger unless you kill his ass".

Its like, I'm a little offended the show is using two of the female leads to put Rick and Shane on this collision course. Frankly, I can't wait until they kill off Shane. I mean, it was a misstep to not kill him off quickly like they did in the book, because he's kinda ingrained in the group now. But at the same time, he's getting too popular, and a lot of the other characters are getting hate from the TV-only audience specifically because they're butting heads with Shane. I mean, they're starting to show Shane as a psycho, but there's a good portion of the audience who actually thinks Shane should be the leader, and think people like Rick and Dale should die. I don't like what they've done with Dale particularly, because his character seems like his character is mostly around to talk shit about Shane. Well, that and be a nosy parker.

Anyways, Herchel's youngest daughter is still in shock, and again, I really hope she's not infected, because they just did that. And, Glenn is freaking out about Maggie because he feel its making him lose his edge. Heh, I guess since he was kinda this dorky loser with no loved ones left, he didn't have much to worry about. But now that he has a hot young thing, he has something to worry about losing.

That sorta "chicks, man" thing is a staple of fiction going back to Lady Macbeth.

I still can't believe they're still at that farm. I have to assume it's a budget decision to do the bulk of your filming at one place, but the fact that the farm is safe removes so much of the tension of the show. I was reading the series bible for BSG (pdf) a few weeks ago, I think it was written for the transition from miniseries to the regular series. One of the things Ron Moore is very clear about is that the threat of a Cylon attack should never be far from anyone's mind. And I think that should apply to TWD too. But all these scenes on the farm, no one is expecting a zombie attack. They're just hanging out, having their meals inside.

I'm fine with that for a short period of time, maybe 1 or 2 episodes of "could this be it? are we really safe here?" before something happens. They find out the place isn't as safe as they thought, a hoard of walkers overruns the place, or even they find a group of unfriendly people nearby. But at no point since they got to the farm has anyone really felt like the farm is at all un-safe, and that makes the show boring. The only time they're put in danger is when someone does something stupid, like wander into town to get drunk, or drive off by herself for no good reason.

Rant aside, there is a website that tracks locations on the show, with a google map, too. One of these days, I want to take a detour on the way to work to see the sherrif's office which is also show in the opening credits, because it's like 1 minute out of the way.

Huh, that is right by the route to work. Actually, isn't that the area where you were wondering why there was that huge crowd out there one night?

It's close by, but I think that was well after the time they would have filmed the pilot.
