Jul. 16th, 2011 05:07 pmSaw the final Harry Potter movie this morning by myself, since the ex-roomie was entertaining out of town friends and C-note figures he can wait until it comes out on Redbox. Its ridiculous that the theater was packed even at the 1030am showing. But I guess its an extremely popular franchise.
It was pretty good, though I think of all the movies, its the one least able to stand on its own. They definitely had to split up the last book for a reason, because even splitting it into to two 2 hr+ movies, there are still a couple of things cut or they had to go over really briefly. I know some people are thinking they just split it into two to make more money, but I don't think they could have satisfyingly done the last book in just one movie (unless they wanted to make it ungodly long).
But yeah, this movie is basically the climax of the last movie, so you definitely can't see this one without having seen the previous one, though I doubt anyone would do that anyways. Its pretty telling when the first half covered several months, and this movie covers only a couple of days. It didn't hit me until Harry was all, "Oh, the other night..." and was referencing something that had happened in the previous movie.
Heh, I did hear a spoiler that I'm glad was actually a foiler and not true, because I would've been so pissed! Anyways, I had heard a rumor that they had changed things around and made it that Snape just worshiped Lily from afar, and they weren't actually friends. Thankfully, that was totally not true. Still, we get a truncated version of their relationship. He met Lily when they were kids, when she first realized she was magical, and Petunia called her a freak (which isn't how it really went down. In the books, Petunia was actually excited about magic until she learned she didn't have the gift like Lily did. And how amusing is it that Petunia is now a witch on True Blood?), and he showed Lily she was not alone. But then when they got to Hogwarts, she got sorted into Gryffindor to his utter disappointment, where she met James, who was a total ass to him. And to further twist the knife, James and Lily fell in love. And then when Voldemort first made his play for power, he turned on the Death Eaters if Dumbledore promised to protect her.
Well, we know how that turned out. And so crushed was he that he became a double agent. (Or is it triple-agent? Wait, actually, it might even be quadruple agent!) Its because of his love of Lily that Dumbledore knew he could trust Snape the most out of anyone. And the time it took me to write all that up is the amount of time the movie spent on this part, which was somewhat annoying. If only because Harry's forgiveness doesn't seem "won" plot wise. I mean, Harry is privy to this info now, and he doesn't really have a chance to ruminate on the discovery for the rest of the movie. But then at the "19 years later" point at the end, his eldest kid's middle name is named after Snape and Harry's all, "he was the bravest man I ever knew". Presumably for having to play the bad guy for so long, to put himself in a position to be right next to Voldemort, which is a precarious position to be. Particularly if Voldemort found out he was a traitor. And Voldemort was unaware of his betrayal, he killed Snape for a totally different reason- and not for making any mistake but for following his orders to kill Dumbledore if Draco couldn't!
But I digress, I don't think the movie did a good job of going from Harry hating Snape for killing Dumbledore, to forgiving him (and even trusting him enough to take his tears to use in the pensieve!) Also, covering Harry and Ginny's romance. I mean, they kissed once, and she seemed very upset when they thought he was dead, but they didn't have enough for the shipper in me.
(Also, it was nice to see Cho Chang still around. And has lines! I mean, she's cute and all, but being an Asian with a Scottish accent is what made her hott! Also hott? Hermione in the Bellatrix outfit.)
And wow, I need to re-read the book, because I do not remember that part with Harry talking to the ghost daughter of the Ravenclaw founder at all! Or that Greyback ate Lavender Brown. I was curious if the movie would go further into the deaths of Fred or Remus or Tonks, but they did not. Definitely not Remus or Tonks. They show one of the twins, disarmed, with a female death eater standing over him, but whoever that was was still alive when Voldemort called for the cease-fire. In the books, Fred was killed by an explosion. I guess he still could've, and that scene was George, and the lady deatheater spared him and left.
Other changes, since the actor playing Crabbe had legal troubles, Draco took Goyle and Blaise Zabini (the black Slytherin!) to the room of requirement, and it ended up being Goyle who ended up casting the fiendfyre spell and getting killed by it. Not that casual viewers know the diff between Crabbe or Goyle anyways. Or who the hell Blaise Zabini is. Speaking of black people in the Harry Potter movies. Is it me, or did Dean Thomas grow big? I was all, who the hell is the tall black kid Shacklebolt (the black Auror!) talking to, did he bring his son or something, until I realized it was Dean.
Hmm, I read a review where someone was complaining about the duel between Molly and Bellatrix being changed, but I didn't see any diff between it and the book. Bellatrix tries to kill Ginny, and Molly gets pissed and kills Bellatrix over it.
It was cool to see Neville finally get his due. I can't remember if he and Luna getting together is mentioned in the books, or only in that interview JK Rowling gave talking about who ended up with who in the future. Him telling the others he wanted to tell Luna his feelings because he might not live the night doesn't sound familiar. EDIT: And I realize now they didn't actually end up together, I forgot JK Rowling had her ending up with some random, and Neville with Hannah Abbott.
Owel, its the end of an era. But dang, I had said the world better not end before Lost ended or the last Harry Potter movie came out. But now what is there for me to want the world to keep on going? Actually, I'd be annoyed if the world ended before the Song of Ice and Fire series ended. Both the books and the show!
Also, it was weird to see some people in the FNL forums talk about how sad they were about both FNL and Harry Potter ending this weekend. But since I saw the end of FNL a few months ago when it first came out on DirectTV, I've considered FNL over for a while!
Anyhoo, after the movie, drove down to
psyched_out's new house to pick him and his wife up and take them to the airport. They just moved in, and its a really awesome place. Like if I were his kids' age, I would be totally jealous of them. Because not only will they have their own bedrooms growing up, those rooms are friggin huge!
