Jun. 23rd, 2011 11:34 amFinally saw the first two eps of that "Falling Skies" show. I was a bit iffy on the show, I was feeling a little spent on the whole alien invasion premise, but its at least better than V so far. Its a little more Walking Dead-ish, with more people, and aliens instead of zombies.
So Dr. Carter from E/R is the star, second in command of a resistance unit led by Will Patton. Moon Bloodgood is the doctor chick who has a think for Carter (or Tom, as he's called here). Tom has a couple of sons, one of which is played by Hannah Montana's drummer boyfriend, named Hal. As for the rest of the cast, I only recognize the chicks- there's Hal's GF played by the cute Jessy Schram (Hannah from Veronica Mars), Lourdes, the goody goody girl played by Seychelle Gabriel (young Sand Serif/live action movie version of the Last Airbender's Princess Yue) who so obviously also likes Hal, and a hot tough blond chick played by Sarah Carter (Clark's teleporter wife chick from Smallville. Oh, and Helena in the movie adaptation of the DOA video game. Terrible movie, but hey, she rollerblades in tight outfits and plays beach volleyball in a bikini. Other things she does in a bikini? Fighting other hotties on a rainy beach!)
Anyhoo, now I do my gun breakdown. So, Tom is often sent in scouting missions, and one of his guys carries a friggin' M240B! Not sure why they need something like that! First off, its heavy. If they wanted a suppressive fire weapon, I'd think they'd go with the M249. Or if they needed the 7.62 punch, a MK48 Mod 0, which is way lighter than the M240B. I mean, yeah, its a post apocalypse, but if they managed to get their hands on a 240, the M249 is no less rare (though I supposed the MK48 would be slightly harder to come by)
But yeah, it didn't even come into play! I figured they'd use it to try and blast away at Mechs, but basically they're using it no differently than the lighter assault rifles and carbines the rest of the team is carrying, so why bother lugging around such a heavy weapon? And also, since they're just scouts, I figured they'd try to run rather than trying to take down a mech with something heavy anyways- they're not supposed to be getting into big firefights.
Also, where are they getting a hold of AKs? Yes, you can prolly get an AK for like $5 in some third world village, but that's because the commies flooded those areas with them during the Cold War. Maybe in the Southern US. But New England? An AK would be much harder to come by. I mean, AR-style rifles would be plentiful, both in military and civilian versions. Definitely a lot of M14/M-1As and Ruger mini-14s, as well as a lot of Sig rifles, and the whole gamut of Heckler & Koch weapons. Also lots of bolt action rifles and various shotguns. I can definitely see SKSes.
But then when they got into that mess with the criminal band, those guys had a PKM! How on earth did they score one of those? That would be even harder to come by than an AK. Plus, while it is lighter than M240, since its chambered for the 7.62x54R, where the eff are you going to find belted ammo for it? In a post apocalyptic world where supplies are hard to come by, while the PKM is a reliable weapon, and light for a machine gun, I think the ammo type would cause it to be discarded for weapons made for American calibers like the 5.56 and the 7.62x51. Like you might find 7.62x54R ammo in a gun shop for people with Dragunov copies, but certainly not in a belted form that one could feed into a PKM.
