Saw Green Lantern today with the usual suspects. The 2D version, because this 3-D trend is stupid and I refuse to pay money that might help keep it going on. In any case, I thought it was fine. Certainly not as terrible as the critics seem to think. Its just not as good as the Marvel movies (well, the good Marvel movies) and the Batmans. I think where it suffers is them trying to cram too much in. Like, why in the world did they have Amanda Waller in this (played by Angela Bassett, though I'm surprised neither this movie nor Smallville used CCH Pounder, because in addition to voicing the Wall in the cartoon series, she actually looks tough enough to play her)? She's not even normally a Green Lantern character! I mean, I guess she is the DC universe's closest analog to Nick Fury. But at least him showing up in the Marvel movies makes sense because they're trying to connect different franchises. As far as I can tell, Green Lantern is going to be standalone- they're not trying to link it to Batman or the upcoming new Superman movie.

Also, too much time with Hal being all mopey and unsure of himself to Carol Ferris (they do make a shout-out by having her callsign be Sapphire), and enough time on OA. As much as I like Serena Van Der Woodsen's rack, I'd rather see more of the other Lanterns. Its like you show all these unique looking fellows, and don't do anything with them. But its like he shows up on OA for like 5 minutes, and then we're done with the other lanterns for the rest of the film.

I think they just tried to have too many nods to various things in the Green Lantern mythos too soon. Its like, they should've just kept it simple and make a decent movie that stands on its own merits, then start into the other stuff.

Also, a couple of other complaints I have, but not specifically about Green Lantern. The whole humans are special in science fiction, I know you can't really do anything about it, but it is still annoying when they act like humans are the only courageous beings in the entire universe in various sources of fiction. Its like, what, no other species has a concept of courageousness or tenacity or not giving up?!

That, and yeah, I understand Hal is a skilled, hot shot pilot, so they wanted to demonstrate that and I guess maybe in these comic/sci-fi universes the US doesn't have the best planes in the world, but do these fictional companies really need to be working on super smart drone planes that dominate the skies? Because guess what? We do that already! Its like they're all, "This super plane can beat anything in the air!" Who the hell are we going to supposed to use it against? No one in the world has planes as good as ours (I think our stuff is definitely superior to anything the Europeans, Ruskies, or Chinese have), and there would never be a war where we would have to find out, because the large scale war just isn't something that will ever happen again.

Anyhoo, afterward finally tried that Rose & Crown tavern place on Powers Ferry that's where La Madeline used to be. It was an interesting menu, it was kinda English food, but not really. But it was pretty tasty.
