TV commentary:
Game of Thrones- So, that thing happened, and everyone is up in a tizzy about it. I am of course referring to Ned's death (which I knew was coming). And some people think it was a cheap ploy to get a shock, but that's what happened in the effin books, deal with it! I'm more pissed off by the people who are vowing to boycott the show and never watch it again unless they bring him back. How the eff are they supposed to bring him back, his head was frakkin chopped off!
And they're all, "well, the audience for books is different than the audience for TV, so they need to take liberties to appeal to a TV audience." Of course, if the show didn't kill him off, then they'd face a huge horde of really pissed off book fans who would be incredibly outraged that they changed such a vital plot point!
Laguerta not being killed in the beginning of Dexter, or Lafayette still being alive in True Blood, you can get away with that, because they were minor characters that the show decided to do something with. Ned's death is vital to the plot! Just because you thought he was the main character doesn't mean he's obligated to survive. I think that's one of the things I like about this series. Guys like Ned, who you think are the protagonists, are offed, while other guys, who you think are just randoms end up being players for a long time.
Like if they don't off Shane real soon on the Walking Dead, I'll be annoyed, because I don't think you can't not have that plot point. Same with Lori. But yeah, I wouldn't say Ned was THE main character anyways. His wife and children (well some of them), Dany and even Tyrion were as big a protagonist as Ned was, I think. And I think his death is a little thing people like to call "motivation". Plus, his children as characters wouldn't get a chance to shine with his shadow still looming over them. Like if Ned ended getting up shipped to the wall like they wanted, Jon Snow would have him to fall back on and wouldn't have a chance to prove himself. Robb would just seem like a "place holder", him leading the army until they could find some excuse to get his father back from the wall. Sansa wouldn't finally learn the cruel reality of how things worked in the royal court, and Arya wouldn't have to figure out how to get out of the utter friggin horrible sitch she's in, because she'd have her daddy to possible rescue her one day.
Besides, Ned and Robert were the "heroes" of the previous war. This is the time for the Stark children, and Dany and other people to write their names in the annals of history.
The writers of these works have a story they're telling, and its their story. If it doesn't go the way you expect T-S!
