TV Commentary:
Lost- So, we don't see any of the Losties this week or the aftermath of last week's events. Nope, this week, we learn Jacob and MiB's back story, and actually get a couple of answers to certain questions.
So, Jacob and Esau are twins, born to a young mother who shipwrecked on the island and were found by Allison Janney (whom I will refer to onward as Not-mother). Anyways, real mother is still preggers when Not-mother finds her. She nurses her back to health, and helps her give birth. She has Jacob first, and then his brother, whom she didn't expect and thus had no name for him (and we never do find out what it is, he's always referred to as "brother"). Not-mother is crazy though, as she gets a crazy glint in her eye when she sees the boys and brains the real mother.
She raises the kids as her own, with Esau supposedly being her favorite, though Esau thinks otherwise at times. But she loves them both very much, just in "different ways", whatever that means. But as I said, she's also crazy and totally lies to them over and over. First, she tells them there's nothing out in the world beyond the island, and that they're the only people in existence. Then when the brothers encounter other people while hunting, she lies and tells her sons that those are people, but they're not like herself and them, as they have evil in their hearts. She warns the brothers to stay away from them.
Then, she blindfolds them and takes them a golden cave that water comes out from that's full of a magical light. She says the cave needs to be protected from other people- the light within does exist in all people's hearts, in a very small quantity. But if people knew about the cave, they would try to go in take it and they'll take too much and it will go out. The boys heed their mother's warning, but it seems Esau is still curious about these other people.
Then his real mother's ghost appears to him (but not Jacob) and tells Esau those are his real people, and Not-mother has been lying to him this whole time. He leaves to join them, and Not-mother is really sad. Jacob still meets with Esau in secret and they talk from time to time. Esau says Not-mother wasn't lying when she said man was evil, but he still works with them because he wants off the island.
Many years pass, and Esau thinks he's figured out a way off. He and the men have found places where "metal acts funny"- (i.e. strong electromagnetic fields), and he thinks he can build a device (the wheel!) to allow him to leave. Jacob goes running to Not-mother, who confronts Esau and knocks him out. Then she proceeds to slaughter the villagers and fill the well (how she does all this by herself they don't say), and shows Jacob where the cave is. She warns him to never go into the cave though, as it will lead to a fate worse than death. She tells him it will soon come time for her to pass the torch of protecting the island to him. Jacob is all, "You meant for brother to do this, didn't you, but since I'm all that you have left, that's why you're tasking me with this!" She admits Esau was her first choice, but she knows now she should have picked Jacob all along.
Esau wakes up and goes to Not-mother while Jacob is not around and kills her. Jacob happens upon them right after, then beats the crap out of Esau. Distraught over his mother's death, he drags Esau to the cave and throws him in, since it will lead to a fate worse than death. Esau gets sucked in, and out comes Smokey! So maybe Esau isn't really smokey, or his very first meat suit (a la Locke). Because Jaocb finds Esau's body later, then he interns both him and not-Mother in the caves, and they are the "adam and eve" Locke, Jack, and Kate found in s1. So, we got some answers, tho some more questions, like who is Not-mother, and what is this golden light?
Glee- In this ep, Kurt continues to get all jealous of Finn and Burt's relationship, so he tries to become the son he thinks his dad wants. He starts "dating" Brittany and dressing like his dad and singing more "manly" songs. Burt eventually tells his son that he's sorry he's been spending more time with Finn, but changing into the son Kurt thinks Burt wants him to be isn't the answer. He shows himself to be the ultra-understanding dad he is by telling him he needs to be true to himself and they'll figure out how to have an equitable relationship from there.
Puck ends up having to shave his mohawk because his mom thought she saw a mole on his scalp, but it turns out it was nothing. Still, now he's less bad-ass, and the nerds throw him in the dumpster. He decides the way to save his rep is to date Mercedes. She's reluctant at first, but then Puck serenades her with Sammy Davis and she agrees. She doesn't like him all that much, but she figures it would help them both out, so she goes with it. But of course Santana gets all pissed about it and they fight over him. In the end, when Puck starts retaliating against those who went after him when he lost his mojo, Mercedes quits the Cheerios and breaks up with Puck, because its not what she wants anymore.
In the weirdest storyline of the ep, Rachel loses her voice because she's been working full bore, ignoring the tickle in the back of her throat. Her doctor warns her to lay off for a while and wants to give her a tonsilectomy, but she refuses, because she's scared she might not be able to sing again if she has the surgery. She freaks out because she thinks her voice is the only thing that makes her worth anything. So Finn takes her to some random quadriplegic friend we never knew he had, who teaches Rachel life goes on after you lose what you're good at (quad-friend was a football star, but got crippled), and to take it easy- sure, rest her voice, but not to freak out over the possibility she might not be able to sing and that her life would be over if that did happen. Apparently, the actor playing the quad is a real quad. Still, it was kinda weird to have this character suddenly show up. Don't they already have a crippled character who's overcoming adversity on this show? Like, Artie had nothing to do in this ep, why not use him to teach Rachel a lesson?
