Cool, I didn't realize Penny Arcade mentioned the G.I.Joe Resolute mini-series in their new section this past Wednesday. They also link to Warren Ellis' blog article about the series. He was totally unfamiliar with G.I.Joe going into this, but mentioned how he did a lot of research once he accepted the job. And I can see that. The Storm Shadow-Snake Eyes thing in the show is definitely in the vein of the original comic backstory. There are major changes as I've said, but its also got elements of the original (Zartan killing SS's uncle, SS's jealousy of SE, etc). Then you have the Duke/Scarlett (cartoon) vs the Snake Eyes/Scarlett (comic) pairings. And I'm curious if that's why a certain change was made in how Snake Eyes became mute.
In the comic, Snake Eyes was mute and horribly disfigured because of a helicopter accident and saving Scarlett's life, as he got blasted in the face with glass and fire getting her out of the wreckage. In Resolute, its because Zartan sniped him in the face/neck before sniping Storm Shadow's uncle. Episode 9 though, Scarlett makes her choice, and its Duke. Ida know, it just seems if they had the original backstory of how SE got mute, it would kinda make her look bad. I mean, a guy horribly disfigures himself and goes mute saving your life, and you choose the other guy? Not that you should choose the guy who literally went through fire for you, because the heart wants who the heart wants, and its not fair to anybody to stay out of guilt or sense of obligation. But it still does look kinda bad to an outside observer.
Hmm, he also mentions how Lady Jaye isn't in Resolute. As I said in a previous post, I thought I had heard she was going to be and that she was gonna be a Starbuck-ish character, but Ellis says she isn't in the series. But I think he means he didn't write her in, because you definitely see her amongst the group of joes they do show. She just doesn't speak or do anything.
TV commentary:
The Office- As much as I said I enjoyed Jim's comeuppance these past few weeks, I'm glad when things really counted, Charles' opinion of Jim as incompetent was shown to be unfounded. Heh, when David Wallace was all, "I'm very surprised", he quickly changed his tune. Which is interesting, because I didn't realize he was that much of an ass-kisser.
But seeing how Dwight was an idiot in the meetings and him realizing he backed the wrong horse was pretty hilarious. And I am amused that it Jim's messing with Dwight saves Michael, Pam, and Ryan, as when Dwight tries to out their company being broke to Charles, Jim's messing (coupled with Dwight's idiocy in the earlier meetings) prevented Charles from taking Dwight seriously. And I can accept what Jim did here, because at least this time he was preventing Dwight from destroying people's lives, particularly his fiancee. I was wondering what he was going to do when he chased after Dwight, because he can't exactly try and beat up Dwight to shut him up, so I guess pushing Dwight's buttons to get him to be, well Dwight, made the most sense.
Oh, its also hilarious that Michael Scott Paper company was going broke because of Ryan's incompetence. He acts like he's better than the rest of them because he's Mr. College, but between the website thing and his erroneous business model, he kinda sucks.
And again, while Michael does seem incompetent most of the time, as I've said before, I like these eps where they show him to not be as big a moron as he seems. I guess as someone said, he's terrible at the boss-stuff, but when it comes to sales and negotiations (business-wise, at least), and surprisingly, even customer interaction, he's actually got skillz.
Interesting, since they're keeping Kelly 2, the really bad blow job girl ("Ooh, you are kinky!"), as receptionist, Michael manages to get her on as a sales person. Well, that's what he wanted during negotiations, I'm curious if that's what's happening. It'll be interesting to see her and Jim working at the same role now.
