Slowly making my way through s3 of Avatar. Just saw the Beach ep, which has got to be one of my favorite eps of the series so far. Perhaps its the teen drama-ness of the ep? Its kinda a break from the main plot. Well, not for Team Avatar. They're sort of on break, but then they get accosted by that weird freak Zuko sent after them, who can apparently blow up things with his mind!

But the main plot of the ep is Zuko, Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee spending a weekend at the beach. And hilarity ensues. Where to start? Zuko and Mai are hysterical as a couple. Their interactions are great, like when Zuko gives her a shell:

Mai: "Why would I want that?!"

Zuko: "I saw it and thought it was pretty, don't girls like stuff like this?"

Mai: "Maybe stupid girls!"

HA!!! Of course, the next scene has one of Ty Lee's many suitors giving her the same shell and her loving it. But they're such a grim and surly couple! And Azula has such great lines in this episode demonstrating her total psychoness, like when they beat the other kids at volleyball:

"Yes, we have defeated you for all time, you shall never rise from the ashes of your shame and humiliation!"

or when she was trying to hit on that guy:

"Careful, you could puncture the hull of an Empire class fire nation battleship, leaving thousands to drown at sea... because its so sharp!"

Or when she finally got with the guy:

"Together, you and I will be the most powerful couple in the entire world! We will dominate the Earth!"

Girl is psycho! And dark! But what fool turns her down? She's hot, and who wouldn't want to be part of the most powerful couple in the world?! It does not make cents! Yeah, she's crazy, but an amusing kinda crazy!

Actually, Azula's voice and mannerisms in this ep strangely reminded me a little of Paris from Gilmore Girls. But the ep was very Breakfast Club-ish with a little Can't Hardly Wait and American Pie 2 thrown in, where the kids learn about themselves and each other.

We learn Ty Lee's a flirty attention whore because she has 5 sisters who look just like her and wanted to stand out. We learn Mai is so gloomy and depresso because although she was rich and spoiled because she was an only child for the longest time, she was forced to act a certain way and do nothing that might adversely affect her parents political aspirations. Zuko, is of course, still totally conflicted over the events of the show. And while Azula doesn't admit she's jealous of how easy it is for Ty Lee to get boys, she does lament the fact her mother thought she was a monster. But before you think she's gonna get all mushy, she tells the others, "She was right, of course. But it still hurt!" Ah, she's such a crazy little sociopath!

But in the end, they get over all the little arguments they had with each other and bond over totally trashing that poor kid's house. (Seriously though, I can see perhaps not recognizing Azula at first, but they should recognize Zuko from the scar!) Heh, its a twisted, evil version of one of those evil teen movies.
