Krug's original thought was that he was touching the fruit twice so that they'd be freshly dead... which sorta makes sense from an actual plant life/death perspective, but might be confusing to the audience. But when he ate his pie and it turned rotten, I guess that's not what they're going with. Didn't he have flowers in a nearby windowsill or something once? Did they die when he was making pie?
