I assumed he just doesn't like to kill people if he can avoid it, part of how they try to make sure we (the audience) side with Michael rather than the bad guys / people who burned him / whatever.
I mean, Fi's always talking up how she wants to kill people and go in with guns blazing and all, but it's like when she's working with him, she has to respect HIS rules on jobs or something. It's not just that he has to have a plan and she likes to just run in like a crazy person...
