Jesus Christ Superstar- I thought it was fine, but of course, while I listen to the songs and watch clips, I haven't seen the original movie in decades prolly. Like I had totally forgotten about the whipping scene, with Pilate counting the whip strikes out, which disturbed me when I was younger.
It was more concert than musical, which as
isabel79 pointed out, had the annoying effect of the crowd's cheering and applause distracting from the performance. Heh, I was disappointed the pharisees didn't have crazy hats, instead looking like evil space wizards.
It was also weird that the show seemed to be going for a goth punk look for everyone else, but Sara Bareilles was dressed more akin to the original movie, while John Legend just came out as himself. I guess that couldn't be helped though. What was he gonna do? Wear a wig? A robe? So I think casting any pretty famous person in that role, unless they already looked like the traditional idea of Jesus (long brown hair, beard), it would be weird if they tried to make the famous person try and look like that.
I think my only issue with his casting (other than missing some of the notes, but these are some hard songs, and its live, so I'm not gonna fault him that) is that he didn't seem to bother with a lot of the "acting" parts of the performance. Like Jesus is supposed to get horrified at some of the things the disciples are saying in Hosana and Simon Zealotes. But he's more or less, whatever.
Overall, I think it was fine.
