Doctor Who- Hey, I love Doctor Who as much as the next person, but was the question, "Who will play the next Doctor?" really so big they had to have a live special to reveal who it would be? Its not like the fans have control over it- I mean, who the powers that be choose, that's who it's gonna be. And there was all the speculation and people giving their ideal choice for the next doctor (not to mention the inevitable arguments when some were all, "the next doctor should be a chick or a person of color!" and people being all, "You can't do that!" Well, technically they can, there's no rule saying the Doctor can only turn into white dudes)

Personally, maybe it was a good thing I'm an American fan of the show, so I wasn't really familiar with Christopher Eccleston, or David Tennant or Matt Smith before Doctor Who. I have no idea if they were known entities in Britain before they were the Doctor. I mean, the Doctor is such a character, I'd prefer it to be someone I don't know so I don't have their previous stuff coloring my view of the character.

But anways, so the new Doctor is going to be that Malcolm Tucker guy? The cursing guy from "The Thick of It"?! I heard he was one of favorites people wanted, and I'm sure he'll do fine, its just weird to me because yeah, I think of him as that guy who goes on those expletive filled ranks. Its even weirder given he was already previously on both Doctor Who and Torchwood as different characters. I mean, its one thing for Companions or Torchwood agents to be re-used (like Martha being that one chick's identical twin cousin, or Gwen Cooper being the descendant of that maid, did they bother trying to make a connection between Amy and the random oracle chick from Pompeii Karen Gillan played in that ep?), but to do that for the Doctor. Though I did see jokes saying it was going to be pretty hard to find a British actor who hadn't been on Doctor Who. Though that's not even remotely true, I wanna say there where dudes amongst [livejournal.com profile] isabel79's list of British actors she liked who were not on Doctor Who. Like Apollo! But there have been a lot of British actors who have been on it. Though I guess Sherlock and Watson were also never on Doctor Who either. Or Luther (is he Luther, or is he Stringer Bell?).

EDIT: One more tidbit I saw pointed out about Peter Capaldi being the new Doctor Who- In World War Z, he's credited as "W.H.O. Doctor". That's a hilariously weird coincidence.
