So the new Ultimate Spiderman cartoon started up today. Its going for a little more humor than Young Justice, though not as wacky as something like Batman: Brave and the Bold. As far as I can tell, it doesn't take place in the Ultimate universe. (They do give a reason why the show is called Ultimate Spiderman in the first five minutes of the first episode)

Even though it follows the adventures of Spiderman, unlike some other superhero cartoons, its not insular. It very much covers the entirety of the Marvel Universe, and all manner of characters show up/are referenced. One thing they did in the first couple of episodes though, and I wonder if they'll continue to do it, or if it was just done in the initial eps to establish the characters to folks who aren't familiar with the Marvel Universe, is Peter narrating a quick 10-15 second blurb on who this person or that is.

More stuff: under a spoiler cut )

All in all, I found the show amusing enough.

Have the telly on one of my guilty pleasure movies right now as I type this- Independence Day. (Another guilty pleasure movie- The Peacemaker with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman) This movie just amuses me with the number of random people in it. I mean, there were a lot of big and sorta big names. But you have guys like Adam Baldwin and Raphael Sbarge as random Air Force Officers, Eleanor Waldorf as Jeff Goldblum's ex-wife, President Roslin as the President's wife. And apparently I've seen this movie enough that I know the lines by heart. How is that possible?

Also, caught some old eps of Voltron on Hulu for some reason. Why on earth would they have to ride down a trapeze thing to get to the railcar that takes them to their lions? What if they slipped one day and fell to do their death? That would be a silly way to die! And what's with the Japanese and elaborate transformation sequences? Like this one ep they were taking on this hot shot robeast pilot, and they had already formed Voltron, and got caught in some sort of laser-net mine field thing. So they quickly separated to get out of it. And then they had to reform Voltron, and thus had to do the damn sequence again! Did the episode need filler or something? Because Voltron separated instantly, and we already saw them form Voltron before in the ep (twice even, because this was the second time in the ep they faced the guy!), why not just skip to the part where he's already back together?

I'm also confused how they won. The first time they faced him, they tried and failed at the Lionhead attack. Which is another crazy thing, is it really wise to practically use themselves as missiles that they launch at their opponents? I mean, its one thing to just launch the lion heads like that, its like what if they get destroyed? I'd say those Lions are useless without their heads. And it doesn't seem like they would be able to repair such damage! But Pidge, Lance, Hunk, and Princess Allura are flying those damn things! What if they get killed? (also, since Lotor has like a major hard-on for Allura, shouldn't he want his men to hold back whenever they're fighting Voltron so he can capture her alive?)

But I digress, so they miss because the robeast is going too fast. So the second time around, they don't have Voltron goes as fast as possible until they're right about to launch the lion head attack. Thus, its supposed to throw off his timing. But even if he thinks they're going at speed X, when they're really capable of speed Y, I would think he would punch it as far as he can go! Like he wouldn't be all, "Oh, they can only go this fast, I will only goes as fast as needed to just narrowly avoid the attack instead of going as fast as I can!"

So in any case, they punch through the robeast with the lion heads, and then follow up with a blazing sword attack, and the whole thing doesn't make sense, but whatever, they win.
