What's up with Fox skipping an ep of House? I was hoping to finally get caught up on 4th season, but they skipped an ep! According to TWoP, there's supposed to be another ep between the magician played by Nigel from Crossing Jordan/Cuddy's panties one (it always confuses me that Cuddy acknowledges she dresses slutty yet she always seems to be surprised when people don't take her seriously as an administrator) and the Christmas ep with Donna from West Wing. And tonight is the Mira Sorvino one.
So what the eff? Was it not on the website either? Because I recall the roomie missing it the first time around because he was unaware that the contest was finished, and from what I've seen the contest seems to have ended in the ep between last weeks and last night's! Why are they not repeating it?!
So gametrailers is doing its Best of E3. I dunno what it is, but I've always seemed to be better at third person shooters than first person shooters. They had some good picks in their nominees for best third person shooter. As I've said before, I really like the look of Gears of War 2, and Mercs 2 looks more and more like GTA but with more heavily armed vehicles. I'm not sure if I'd count Resident Evil 5 as a third person shooter though. Yeah, ever since RE4, there's been more action in the RE games, but your movement is still kinda cumbersome, compared to other third person shooters.
Nowadays, its hard to really categorize these games into a certain category. Like RE4 and 5 take place in that third person view but they don't feel like shooters. Same goes for the MGS games. I think Penny Arcade quantified it well when MGS4 came out- the game is about sneaking, and the problem was that the controls are not fine tuned enough that it was easy to mess up your stealth movement and get discovered, at which point the game turns into a poorly controlled shooter. Its still a pretty good game, but Solid Snake doesn't handle nearly as well compared to characters from other third person shooters. Well, when it come to actual fighting, as the controls are set up more for the sneaking thing.
And I wouldn't call GTA a third person shooter either. Yeah, lots of missions involve crazy shootouts, but the control scheme for GTA feels like a hybrid of games. Yet, Mercs 2 feels like a third person shooter even though its basically the same control schema. Maybe its the "feel" of the game? In Mercs, you're supposed to be shooting up stuff, whereas GTA, you can cause such havoc, but that's a fun little diversion as opposed to the heart of the game. Though I guess for some people that's the only reason they play the game.
Same goes for fighting games- Gametrailers' nominees for Best Fighting game include two wrestling games. And I think wrestling games belong in their own category because their control schemas are so radically different. I mean, the 2d fighters play more or less the same and the big 3d fighter series- Tekken, SC, DOA, and VF, while they have differences in what the buttons do (Tekken is left and right punch and kick, SC is horizontal attack, vertical attack, guard and kick, DOA is punch, kick, throw, and "free", and VF is punch, kick, guard) the movement and controls are somewhat similar. Rasslin' games though, play totally different, though I'm not sure I can accurately put into words the intricacies of how they differ. They just do!
They do include MK vs DC in their nominees. Really? I mean, its an interesting new idea for a franchise (well, not that new since Marvel vs Capcom has been out for about a decade already). I mean, graphically it doesn't look all that hot. And the actual movement and animation is amateurish compared to what's out now! There's no excuse for such simplistic movement in today's gaming world. And they even re-use a lot of the moves- if you look at the developer demo, they give Scorpion back that cool scissor leg take down he used to have in the previous game (was it MK2?), but expanding it so after he knocks them off their feet he keeps them within the grips of his legs so he can pick them back up and slam them face first to the ground. And they give Batman the exact same move! Now, I can excuse that if they have a lot of characters, but they've only shown less than a dozen so far, and other games have one and a half to two times as many characters without having to share movesets!
