Mar. 2nd, 2008 03:54 amJust finished reading the Nightly News. Definitely an interesting read. I can see the one description of it being Network meets Fight Club. Given its commentary on the modern news media, I'm surprised there isn't more buzz on it. Particularly given the brutality and acts of violence in the series towards the media. Its not really an action book by any means, but there are some graphic acts of violence that take place.
Also caught up on Powers. Well, up to issue 27 of volume 2 at least. That's another interesting series. Though when did this trend by the independent (well non-Marvel/DC) companies to have series portraying superheroes as frakked up, or at the very least, not as heroic, start, I'm curious? Is it a sign of the times? Are people tired of seeing beings possessing powers and being paragons of honor and virtue? I mean, its interesting to see how many of these series turn a lot of famous iconic heroes on their ears. Like a Superman analogue just going nuts and realizing he could change the world to how he sees fit and there's not really a damn thing the world could do about it. Powers does go a little crazy though. I mean, talk about a high "hero" body count!
But yeah, did the trend start with Watchmen, and the concept lay dormant for a few years and was resurrected by series like the Authority? Some go a little too far though- I think The Boys goes a little too far. Its a little too contemptuous of the super hero concept.
What's with these movies where they do the mexican stand-off, and both parties eventually try to fire their guns and realize they're out of bullets? Like, for some reason the slide didn't lock open as normal when a pistol clip is out of bullets? Or are they asserting that both people had some sort of misfire? Woah, watching Drop Zone right now, I had no idea Swoop was frickin' Jake Kane? Or did I realize that at one point and totally forgot? I find it incredibly weird. I just switched it to Cruel Intentions, and I had no idea the Gregster was played by Eric Mabius.
But heh, I'm sometimes amused that my view of reality is so messed up that I often say to the usual supects, "I can't remember if this happened on TV or real life..." I'm even more amused when its something fantastical that sounds like something on a TV show, but was actually real life.
