Halfway through s1 Doctor Who. When I was growing up, my dad used to watch it on PBS, and it looked pretty silly to me. But the new series is actually pretty cool. I don't know if I prefer the ninth doctor (Christopher Eccelston) or tenth doctor (David Tennant). Who's considered better anyways? But I do prefer Rose over Martha.

Anyways, coming into work today, it was on the news again. And they were doing a story on th VT shooter, all hindsight and "why didn't they do a better job of warning people?" And that had me wondering, do the students and faculty feel that way, or is it just the media and parents?

I only ask because here at GT, we recently added that new emergency communication system that will warn people via e-mail, phone, and sms in the event of an emergency. Well, everyone will get the e-mail notification, but you have to opt in for the phone and sms messaging. Of course, it seems to me people would be hesitant to give out the latter, I guess worried that info might get in the hands of telemarketers or something. Or mebbe they're worried they'll get spammed with non-emergency messages, even though only a select few have access to send messages, and we would never do that.

I suppose all these college campuses implementing similar systems might be a knee jerk reaction to an incident, that while tragic, is actually a pretty rare occurrence. I signed up for the service as it seemed kinda hypocritical not to, given it would be my job to send out such warnings. But as I said above, given the rarity of actual emergencies that would warrant such an alert, do people feel its not worth the risk or the bother to hand out their personal information? I know the percentage signed up right now, so I'm curious if that number will change given its only been a couple of weeks since the system was brought online and people may not be aware of it yet. Or will it stay the same, and the majority of people don't actually want that level of warning?

I'm honestly curious- if something bad happens, we'll warn people via e-mail, (and phone and text for those signed up for such things), and send a warning over the cable system, and they have a loud speaker system across campus currently being set up (or it already may be online). Is that enough? Too much? I won't ask not enough, because what other way is left to warn people? If you don't reach them by phone or e-mail, they're not watching the telly, and somehow miss the loud voice warning of an emergency blaring across campus, what else can you do? But I digress. With the news filtering out through e-mail(our wireless internet coverage across campus is pretty good, and incoming freshmen have been required to have computers for years now, and laptops seem to be getting to be a more popular choice over a traditional desktop, so e-mail seems to be a viable emergency warning system even for those "out and about"), tv, and over the air, do people feel that's enough, and word of mouth will bring the warning to them without having to be bothered on their mobile? Or is warning people on their cells and pdas still a wise thing to do?

Dang, went to Junior's for a grilled cheese w/bacon, and forgot to put spices on my fries!

Had dinner last night at Fuddrucker's, getting their new cracked peppercorn burger- I saw it had a special horseradish sauce, so I had to get it. Of course, I still think Max and Erma's has the best horseradish burger. Anyways, I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] clevemire about my poll the other day, and I mentioned my skepticism at people not having heard of go-bots. I mean, I figured they'd be known because they're the poor man's transformers. Then he mentioned how he prolly couldn't even name a go-bot (he asked me if I could. But of course! I can name more than the following, but I'll stick with the six main characters of the cartoon- Leader-1, Turbo, Scooter, Cy-Kill, Crusher, and Cop-tor) and I realized why I can remember all this crap from when I was a kid.

Because I used to make lists! Seriously, I had like a trapper keeper full of lists of various things when I was a kid- rosters, weapons, and vehicles from various toylines and video games, cars, military vehicles and weapons, fighting styles of the world, favorite actresses/models, etc. I didn't have a lot of the toys, but I'd go to the mall and toys r us and browse the action toy section and memorize the figures and vehicles to put in my big book of lists when I got back home. Or at the bookstore and magazine stands- new model of car or gun out? Put in on the appropriate list! I used to love going to the auto shows and then listing all the new cars that were going to come out. And this was before the days of the internet, too! Heh, like if I saw some hot actress in a movie or TV show, I had to wait until the frickin' end credits just to figure out who she was! So its not like I just remembered this stuff, I guess by writing it all down I was making some sort of effort to know it, much like Mike Seaver did when he was trying to cheat on his history test by writing the answers down on his shoes. By doing that, he actually learned the material and didn't have to cheat.

So when people think of Jenny Lewis, do they think, "Oh, that Rilo Kiley chick who sometimes sings with the Watson Twins?" (Sarah Silverman was on Hee Haw?!) Or do they think, "Oh, that chick from the Wizard?" (Or do they think, "Who?!") And someone tell me if I'm making this up, but I swear she and Fred Savage were in a pepsi commerical together, but I can't find evidence of its existence on google or youtube.

Anyways, since its so quiet that Bjork's running around screaming and doing a classic muscial number, just thinking of random stuff to look up on youtube. I've seen lion voltron, and I've seen vehicle voltron, but I've never actually seen The Voltron teamup. I feel so gipped. I guess its one of many things I missed. Like, I never saw the Head of the Class finale. I don't know why, I was at [livejournal.com profile] isabel79 and [livejournal.com profile] 7500centfish's house (staying over on a Wednesday night for some reason) and watching Aliens on CBS (even though I had already seen it, and it would be censored a bunch since its being shown on network TV), when halfway through the movie I thought, "Damn, I just missed the end of Head of the Class". Hey, I thought it was an amusing show.

Whatever happened to the kids on that show? I don't recall Robin Givens fate post-Tyson. Simone was on a few eps of the various L&Os (what happened to her?!). And Eric is one of the minds behind Smallville. (And didn't he help steal Kitt once in an ep of Knight Rider? Like he was working for the chick who played the immortal model agency owner whom Duncan couldn't kill but Methos could because he was born "long before chivalry was invented" on Highlander, and then she later teamed up with Garth Knight and they went sailing over a cliff in Goliath? And who was a tougher enemy for KITT? KARR or Goliath?) Oh, I forgot Short Round was around in the last seasons of that shows. So is Short Round Short Round, or is he Data? I mean, both Temple of Doom and the Goonies were popular movies.
