Finally caught up with Y the Last Man. ( Y? )
Anyways, saw the Grindhouse today with the usual suspects. And it was freakin awesome! Sure, the commercials can make some parts look silly, but its silly in a good way. Its a fun, hilarious, sexy, action-filled romp! At 3+ hours, its still pretty long though. I mean, it is actually two full length movies shown back to back.
Being a film for fans of such cinema, its chock full of references to the genre itself, as well as Tarantino and Rodriguez's previous movies. Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" is the better of the two films, in my opinion, but Tarantino's "Death Proof" is pretty good as well. Both can be pretty gory and hilariously exploitive at times, but like I said, the films don't take themselves too seriously, so it works. And the fake trailers were all pretty fun.
Anyways, Planet Terror is a pretty funny take on the sci-fi/horror films of old. Though Death Proof doesn't really have an analog- it seems like its own genre. Or rather, as
clevemire said, its a Tarantino movie, not really based on some other class of film. I mean, I guess one could say its kinda like Spielberg's Duel. Or maybe, the opposite of The Wraith. You know, starring Charlie Sheen and Sherilyn Fenn, where he plays an avenging spirit with a "special" black car out to get the illegal racer gang who murdered him? Only Kurt Russell is an evil bastard taking his frustrations out on innocent thought naughty chyx with his "special" black car. Or maybe an opposite of Faster Pussy Cat! Kill! Kill!, where the bad ass chyx with attitude are the good guys instead of a bunch of psychopaths. Those are the closest films that come to mind.
Heh, though I'm sure this movie will bring renewed interest in Vanishing Point, given many have never heard of the movie, but since Tracie Thoms and Zoe Bell were talking about how it was like hot shit, that they'll totally check it out to see if its any good. (Oh, wait, I remember this movie now, its the movie they're referencing in Audioslave's video for "Show Me How To Live"!)
Oh, my biggest disappointment in Death Proof is that they didn't have enough of Mary Elizabeth Winstead prancing around in her little cheerleader outfit. She's looking wicked mad cute in that. Though Rosario Dawson hiking up her knee length skirt for the climactic final action serquence was pretty hott. And while that Zoe Bell chick wasn't as purty as the other girls, she still has a certain charisma. GMA says its the strap drawing attention to her chest, but I think it might be that Kiwi accent. And I actually liked Tracie Thoms' tough guy talking chasing down Kurt Russell. There's a certain appeal to girls being all tomboyish.
Both films also have a lot of famous faces. Well, famous to those who've seen 80s action and thriller movies or watch a lot of TV. Though what's with Sydney Tamia Poitier dropping the "Tamia" part of her name? I think that confuses the hell out of audiences. Yeah, she spells it Sydney, and her famous dad spells it Sidney, but people see the name "Sydney Poitier", they're prolly expecting to see an old black dude.
I'd definitely recommend it, if you have the three hours to sit down in the theater. Well, mebbe just to certain people, because I can easily see people not thinking its their cup of tea. But if you like Tarantino and/or Rodriguez, and are just a big fan of cinema, I think you'd enjoy it.
Oh, they showed the trailer for I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry before the film. I had seen it on Youtube already. But seeing Jessica Biel in that cat suit and all soaked in her undies on the big screen was still totally hott. To quote Michael Clarke Duncan from "The Whole Nine Yards"- ffv('Seriously, that ass!') Speaking of Jessicas in their undies, Jessica Alba is also in her underwear in the trailer for Dane Cook's Good Luck Chuck.
Also weird, they showed the old Live Free or Die Hard trailer, instead of the new one:
This one you actually see Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Bruce Willis' daughter. Though the scene with John Mcclane facing off with the F-35B Lightning II (you can tell its supposed to be an F-35 instead of a Raptor because it has VTOL capability) was kinda over the top.
Oh, they showed a trailer for Hostel II. When they first mentioned Russian men, I thought it might've been a trailer for Day Watch. I still haven't seen Night Watch, but I hear both films are pretty cool. From what I've seen though, I don't think I'd exactly call it "The Matrix with Vampires" as some people are wanting to call it.
