Saw the midnight showing of Riddick Thursday night. It was pretty awesome. I like the look and feel of it. Lots of interesting creature, character, and planet designs. The only thing I had issue with was Riddick's fight as he waded through necromongers on Crematoria. They were doing these really disorienting flash-cuts which were totally unneccesary. I mean, it was okay for the first few fights on Helion prime to be like that because one was in a darkened room, and it accentuated the panic the soldiers felt trying to take out an enemy who could see them perfectly but they couldn't find. And the other was during the chaos of war, with the sky lit up with anti-aircraft fire and orbital bombardment and ships fighting and exploding in the air. So there, such a look is excusable. There was no reason to do it that way on Crematoria. But that did sound like a cool game to play (between hardened bad-ass killers)

But I think you can really see the RPG influence in the film. The f/x were pretty cool too. The dogs in the prison kinda looked like the sirrushes in the Epic Level handbook. And the air elemental effects and the Lord Marshall's soul-stealing and super-speed looked pretty cool also.

Speaking of, Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury comes out on DVD this Tuesday. Its an anime done by the Reign/Aeon Flux dude, who also did the "Matriculated" chapter of the Animatrix. Did he also do the animated part of Kill Bill? Anyways, the DVD covers the time between Pitch Black and CoR. Its voiced by the same actors for Riddick and the Imam, though Jack is done by Rhiana Griffith and not Alexa Davalos. I wonder why they changed the actress anyways? I mean, Alexa Davalos is still looking as kinda hot as she did on Angel, and she kicked ass in the role. But Rhiana Griffith is old enough to play the role. And if the anime was done at the same time and she was doing the voice for that, its not like she wasn't available. But I digress. Its also where you first see Toombs. For those keeping up with the time line between all the different products its the X-box game Escape from Butcher Bay, followed by Pitch Black, Dark Fury, and finally CoR.

They had an Alien vs Predator trailer in front of the movie. Looks interesting enough. The predators look bigger and meaner, especially with the face-masks that look like skulls. I'm not sure about the storyline though, looks a little flaky. I guess they also showed a clip of it during the MTV pre-show. They also had a clip from Blade: Trinity. Jessica Biel is looking all Faith like, especially with the bow and arrow. Then the post show had a clip from the new Resident Evil movie? Seriously, is it me, or do a lot of the Milla Jovovich movies have her get naked in the weirdest situations? I mean, here she's in one of those "recovery tanks". Then there's the scene in Fifth Element where she gets re-consitituted and then they have her in the "thermal bandages". And then in the first RE movie, first she wakes up on a shower floor, and the second time she's on a lab table wearing nothing but a couple of napkins. Its ridiculous!

The Ring was just on. Its not as scary in a well lit room like this, but in the theater or at home by yourself at night, it can be pretty scary. Of course, I was getting a little creeped out, because the monitor with all the security feeds had flaked out and turned a bright green. Then David went to check things out and he was gone for a while. And I was also on the phone with the police for some other reason, and they had put me on hold indefinitely. So I'm alone, the security monitors have flaked out, and the line to the police is practically dead since there's no answer. And just fifteen minutes earlier, I swear I was seeing people walking through the halls at the corner of my eye, but when I turned to look there was no one there. Its the makings of a horror movie! And this was right around the end scene (those of you who've seen the movie know what I'm talking about). So things felt a little freaky.

Wow, this day has gone by fast. Its already 4pm! A few more hours and its into the breech. I'm freaking out, mang! I'm not some wise machiavellian mastermind who can plot out sophisticated plays for power! We'll see where the dice fall at the end of the night.
