Heh, I'm amused the last few things I've enjoyed on Netflix are shows/movies with phrases for the titles, "I Am Not Okay With This", "Never Have I Ever", "The Half of It" that feature lesbian couplings. I really hope the former two get second seasons, because you really can't end IANOWT where it did. And I can't wait to see that Devi/Ben/Paxton love triangle on NHIE. (See, I still ship straight folks too!)
A sequel to "The Half of It" would cheapen it though, but I would really love an epilogue where Ellie and Aster do meet back up in a couple years, and Paul is a successful restaurateur.
But heh, that movie did not disappoint, and there were some nice twists. Like it cracked me up that the trailer made it seem like when Ellie was waxing poetic about Aster, Munsky figured out Aster has a thing for her and is all, "I'm so stupid!" But nope! What actually happens is he's like "I'm so stupid, you're saying all these awesome things about her compared to me, and you're not even into her!"
I did not expect him to fall for her though. Like what the eff, why were you still having Ellie romance Aster for you if you're now into her? Though I guess to be fair, the thing with the talent show was while Aster was away. And Aster and Ellie were able to hang out at the hot springs, because he was busy hanging out with her father to do something special for her. And Aster initiated the conversation about football to Ellie as Paul, and then when Ester passed along the good luck wishes, I missed that he was asking Ellie if she would be there, not Aster.
But yeah, I find it weird that people on tumblr were getting bent out of shape about how when everything blew up after Aster caught Paul trying to kiss Ellie and then he finally realized Ellie was in love with Aster, he was all, "You're a sinner, you're going to hell!" It wasn't like a fire and brimstone thing all, "Go to hell sinner!" I think he was definitely hurt, but to me it was more, "Growing up in a small conservative town, I was taught homosexuality is a sin! I am shook that someone I care about is going to hell by that measure." Like afterwards he was doing research to understand all this, and he ended up coming through. Also, it was kinda hilarious that after that blow up where her best friend tried to kiss her in front of the girl she was crushing on, that girl's actual bf confronts Ellie all, "You keep hanging around!" Ellie thinks he's also found out her secret, but Trig is like, "You're in love with me, aren't you?!" and also tries to kiss her.
The climax at the church was wild though. Like what the hell is up with Aster's father that, she's not even out of HS yet, and he's cool with Trig basically proposing to her in front of the whole church. Like he wants his daughter to get married to some idiot at 18?! What was even more amusing is, Ellie basically confesses her love to Aster, and everyone is oblivious. Like the whole Cyrano plot is revealed to Aster, so she slaps Munsky for being a liar, and I think the rest of the church was all, "That was weird, what was that all about?!"
But yeah, I know some are disappointed that Aster and Ellie don't get together in the end (but they might in the future), but as others have said, this wasn't a rom-com, it was a coming of age story. I think the events of the movie really push Ellie, Paul, and Aster to new things. Ellie to get out of their podunk town and not stay out of some misguided obligation to her father. He doesn't want her chained there like he is. Paul also seems to finally get his family to listen to his ideas for the business. And Aster might hopefully not settle for the life everyone else seems to have set for her. Its a good ending, even if one's ship doesn't end up where people wanted it to go.
