TV commentary:

The Originals- Elijah ep. So we find out what happened to Elijah during the time jump. After Marcel compelled him at the end of last season, Elijah woke up on a bus in the middle of nowhere, not knowing who he was or even what he was. All he has is a note in his pocket saying not to look back. The hunger ends up causing him to kill and feed on some random guy, steal his truck and move to NYC. Somehow, he manages to keep a somewhat low profile for weeks. Even if he doesn't know what vampires are, he knows how to hide a body. Well, at the very least, feed in secret.

He meets another vampire, Antoinette (played by Jaime Murray!) who teaches him the ways of being a vampire, and they take a liking to each other. We find out she chooses not to wear a daylight ring, because the sun makes her think she's human, and she doesn't want to forget he fact she's not human anymore. It easier to come to terms with her existence that way. Also, she compels her victims into a state of calm before feeding. She sees it as a small mercy, plus, it leaves the blood cortisol free, so she can feed on fear-free blood. Which she gets Elijah to start doing.

Now, as i said above, Elijah is in NYC. And we all know who else was in NYC at the time, waiting for the Bekster. Marcel! Marcel is all, "What the hell are you doing here?!" and warns Elijah to flee before running off himself. This only makes Elijah want to find out more about his past. But Antoinette thinks that will only bring pain. So she tells him she can't be a part of this, and is moving to France.

With his only lifeline gone, Elijah tears through the city, wrecking his apartment and ripping through a vampire club. And so he bumps into Marcel again, saying he wrote the note, at Elijah's request. Marcel tells him this is what he wanted, he did all this to protect a little girl, and so he should continue to follow the note's advice to not look back and go somewhere far away and live his life.

And so he meets up with Antoinette in France, and its 7 years of bliss. Only Klaus shows up needing Elijah back over the mess in NOLA. He finds Antoinette in the kitchen of the piano bar, introducing himself as Elijah's brother. He tells her its nice she found Elijah and took care of him after all these years, but now he needs his brother back. So he compels her to dump Elijah and leave him forever.

This is when all sorts of things come out. 1) Antoinette isn't compelled, because she's been taking Vervain. 2) When Klaus confronts his brother on who he is and why he's needed, Elijah admits he knows exactly who he is all this time. Well, he doesn't have his memories back, but after bumping into Marcel, he did some research and find out all about who he is and who his family were. And he knows they're monsters. Klaus argues that he doesn't have the context, but Elijah counters that he doesn't have to. After reading about how devoted Elijah was to Klaus, at the expense of himself, he tells his brother, why does he want to go back to that?!

Then he snaps Klaus neck and he and Antoinette run off. Antoinette thinks they should run, but Elijah says its unnecessary. He saw Klaus' eyes the moment Elijah said he doesn't care about his family anymore, that it was another lifetime. And in that moment, Klaus was utterly crushed, knowing he could never get his brother back. So he knows Klaus is just going to leave. Which Klaus does, telling Freya he couldn't find Elijah.

Which is a little nonsensical, because first, Freya wouldn't take that as an answer, Klaus would need to elaborate. Otherwise she'd be all, "Well, let me do a locator spell!" And secondly, its not like he needs his brothers counsel and force of arms like the previous times. Elijah still has part of the Hollow in him. I thought Freya changed her mind and felt this whole plan was just a temporary measure. If she could get all her siblings back in one place and hold off the darkness for a bit, she could figure a way to find a better solution to destroy the Hollow that wouldn't involved them all running away from each other to the ends of the Earth.

But I digress, he also confronts Antoinette on the matter of knowing she could stake Klaus without hurting him, or took vervain to protect herself from compulsion. Vervain is poisonous to vampires, so the only reason she would willingly take it is to protect herself from an Original. So how did she know. Turns out she knew exactly who he was from the beginning, because they're freaking legendary.

So hilariously, they apparently both knew who he was since getting to France, and never said anything about it. Elijah because he didn't want her to know about his horrible past, Antoinette because she didn't want to accidentally do something to remind him of his old life and throw him back headlong into it. But Elijah says that life is over. He's getting rid of his daylight ring to follow in her footsteps, and then being the big drama queen he is, exposes himself to the sun to literally burn away his old life. He catches fire, igniting the box off stuff he had gathered pointing to his old life.

People were freaking out that he killed himself for real, but he's an Original! That won't kill him permanently. And lest you think maybe the show forgot its own lore, he even says a minute before, "I know the sun can't kill me..." He's just being overly dramatic, he'll be fine after this!
