The Magicians- Hilarious ep! Poor Penny! So yeah, astrally projecting outside of his body at the time of its death kept him "alive", but unfortunately, no one can see him. And he's not a ghost- if he was, he'd at least be able to communicate and interact with people. But unfortunately, he's stuck.
Its hilarious, because everyone's reaction to his seeming death is quite disappointing. Quentin laughs, but to be fair, he just came from Alice's house, having witnessed her father's death. Indeed, Penny happens upon Alice saying nice words of mourning, and he's touched, until he realizes she's talking about her dad.
Heh, he finally gets the reaction he's wanting in Fillory, sort of. Benedict is all, "He was my best friend!: and Penny is like "what the?!" But Margo's all, she always thought they would bang. And he's like, yeah, definitely.
Anyways, he does bump into another displaced astral traveler on campus, Hyman, a student from the 20s who was using his powers to be all pervy, and someone moved his body, and he's been lost ever since. Hilariously, he's been apparently watching the gang the whole time, and is a total fanboy, shipping Quentin and Julia.
Penny tries his best to contact the gang, particularly since the Library wants to feed his body to a corpse eater, while Harriet says to burn it. I'm confused as to whether either of those would affect his current state. But having his body eaten would somehow lead to him being back in the library's service, while burning it would lead to his ghost being untethered and I guess free to be an angry ghost, which to Harriet is better than working for the Library.
Kady is at a loss for what to do, but Alice recommends the corpse eater, because a billion years isn't forever. He maybe a slave for a while, but he'd be himself. Burning the body would possibly doom him to a troubled ghostly existence, like they've seen before. Unfortunately, time is close to running out, and all his attempts to contact his friends fail, in hilarious ways.
Like after getting some tips from Hyman, he tries to possess the Margolem. Unfortunately, he can't control her well, so the gang freaks out and thinks it just went crazy and attack it. Also, during all this, Quentin and Julia find a clue leading them to another key, one the Chatwins gave to a war buddy who went to Brakebills. That guy died on the grounds and became a ghost, and the dean at the time just buried the dorm and covered it up.
So they go to the dorm seeking info on the key, which Hyman tells Penny is dangerous, because the ghosts there are angry and could hurt Q and Jules. And ghost can apparently see and hurt them too. Penny follows them, and tries to get the ghost to communicate with them for him. Unfortunately, they're uncooperative- the dead student is stuck in a ghost loop, and his father's ghost, the angry one that would probably hurt them, tries to attack Quentin and Julia. Penny stops him, and tries to get the guy to at least say "Penny is in the room!" But unfortunately, the guy is all, "That's not a name!" and argues with him and Quentin and Julia thinks they accidentally broke the loop, never learning Penny was there.
But yeah, apparently the body had to be burned or eaten within 7 days, and it was nearly the end of the seventh day. Alice convinces Kady to feed Penny to the corpse eater, but Penny ends up possessing the candle and setting himself on fire to prevent that.
Meanwhile, the quest for the key leads to Irene Mcallister. They believe her family may have had the key, as they were related to said student. Dean Fogg thinks since she's been sniffing around wanting progress reports on fixing magic, he thinks that's an in to visit her. Apparently Quentin and Julia want to keep mum about their quest and Julia's abilities, so they fake Quentin pretending his knowledge of legerdemain is something she'd be interested in, while Julia does a minor spell to find and steal the key.
Apparently, the key reveals hidden things, so Penny was all excited to get Julia to find it to hopefully see him, but she doesn't and he ends up going back to where Kady and Alice were with his body to do the aforementioned burning. Of course, Julia find it after he leaves.
So they have another key, but because they wasted Irene's time, she thinks Brakebills is a waste if they can't find a solution, and shuts the school down.
This is when Elliot shows up. Apparently the key led them to the place with the fountains, so he, Fen, and Frey end up fleeing from cannibals and eventually making it to the library, which has doors that he can use the key on to get back. He does have use the key to make an illusion to get past the cannibals- he tried to think of the scariest thing he could think of, and ended up conjuring an illusion of his dad, which immediately fights the cannibals, giving Elliot and fam time to flee to Brakebills.
I don't know if Penny hadn't gotten back to the gang after they found the key, or he was just so morose after having to burn his body, or the gang just didn't happen to use the key in his presence, but Quentin lets Elliot try the key, and he's all, "Hey Penny!" not knowing everyone thinks Penny is dead (apparently the messenger rabbits can't travel to fountain land, as Margo tried to send one to Elliot to inform him of the latest happenings and it got returned to sender).
So Penny is all shocked that someone finally sees him, which is frustratingly where the ep ends.
Oh, one last thing, Margo has finally hit the breaking point. First hearing Penny died, then not knowing what happened to Elliot, fearing he's dead too since the bunny can't reach him. So she tells the Pickwicks its revolution time when they get back. She wants Tick to gather the guards and Benedict to go to the anti-Fae hall and crush a stone to get some anti-Faerie dust she can use to make a weapon so she can kill the faerie queen in front of all her people.
