TV commentary:

The Leftovers- Vindication! So, I saw the title for this ep was "Don't Be Ridiculous", which is of course, one of Balki's signature catch phrases on Perfect Strangers. And given they had the Mark Linn Baker not departing thing like the rest of his castmates on the show before, I was thinking, if this episode has nothing to do with Perfect Strangers, I would be disappointed!

But, right from the very beginning, the opening credits were set to the theme song to "Perfect Strangers". which is a great sitcom theme. (Wonder if its just for this ep, or for the season). Heh, we even get an instrumental piano version when Nora goes to see Lily (more on that later)

Anyways, Nora gets a call from Mark Linn Baker, who for some reaosn tells her about Swedish scientists figuring out the kind radiation left behind by the departed (not sure if they were the same scientists from the first season) and came up with a way to replicate it to send people to wherever the departed went.

Heh, at first, Nora thinks Cousin Larry is suicidal, as she thinks these "scientists" are just incinerating poor hapless folks. But then he gives a speech that totally resonates with her. As he says, four cast members, three depart, what are the chances? Which Nora actually knows, since she was also a 1 in 4. He tells her he's not a sucker, invoking his multiple Yale degrees, he just wants some control in his life.

Which is what Nora is also seeking, given all the weird mishaps she goes through this ep, kiosks insisting she's traveling with a baby, GPSes and parking gates that don't work. (Which is kinda amusing given the whole thing with her character on Fargo this season) So, she's gonna check it out.

Though whether its to go through with it or bust it, we don't know. Pillar man dies in the opening, and his wife tries to claim he departed (with a little help from Matt, who hides the body and tells his sister he never lied, he just never contradicted her story) She ends up digging up the corpse, and blowing up a pic of it to post in the square for all to see. So its interesting, because there's a part of her seeking control (she did used to hire hookers to shoot her while she wore a bullet proof vest, which amusingly enough, is prolly why she doesn't freak out too much when she sees Kevin doing the bag over his head thing), but working ffor the DSD, it also seems like there's a part of her that's like, "Fuck everyone who thinks there's answers and solutions!" and wanting to really burst their bubbles. But I guess the two are linked. Because she's suffering, she wants everyone else to, too.

Anyways, we actually get answers to a number of questions. What happened to Lily? Christine showed up, suing for custody, and since Nora knows what its like to lose a child, she wasn't going to fight it (not that she has any legal recourse to). Which at the same time, must still be devastating to her to lose a child again. How did she break her arm? She got a "Wu Tang Band" tattoo to cover up the tattoos she had of her children's names. Then, feeling embarrassed about it, purposely broke her arm to get a cast to hide it.

And Erika? She merely moved away after Evie's death. Its interesting, and maybe I'm dwelling too much on the specifics, but she's moved on (mostly, her stress-reliever is a trampoline she bought) from Evie's death, having "buried her daughter". Which I'm wondering if she's just using that as an expression, i.e., she has closure? Or was there an actual body she was able to bury? I only ask because as we saw last ep, John believes his daughter is alive, maybe she made it out, maybe she departed. I guess its more a question of, is John totally in denial, still refusing to believe Evie's dead, despite existence of remains? Or was there no body, and Erika isn't willing to believe anything else happened to her daughter other than she got obliterated by a bomb, and had a token funeral so she could move on?

Like last week, we end on a weird note. Some Aussie cowgirls grab an Aussie sheriff who just also happens to be named Kevin and drown him, the leader confident he'll come back. He does not, and in the ruckus, real Kevin's (well, I guess the Aussie guy is still a Kevin, so he's not really fake, I guess I shoulda just said Kevin Garvey) dad comes out of his house to see what's going on. So is this the future? Is this now?
