TV commentary:

The Magicians- Heh, that was easy enough. So the ep starts with Quentin running off to find help, and find the witch with the candy house. He's naturally suspicious, given how Hansel and Gretel goes, but he's out of options. So she offers to help for a vial of his blood.

Which ends up being unnecessary, because Alice is totally fine since she drank that god-essence. She comes back to life, revives Margo and Eliot, and stems the bleeding from Penny's severed hands (I guess its not in her power to re-attach it?)

Anyways, the rest of the gang is pretty pissed, though Quentin tries to defend Julia's actions by telling them about the whole rape thing and using the Beast to take down Reynard. Still, the Beast is a threat, and needs to be stopped. Unbeknown to them, Julia does still care about them, because when she makes her contract with the Beast, she stipulates he can't harm her or Quentin or the rest of them.

So they make a deal, he helps her kill Reynard, and she "immediately puts down the knife". Which, he sees the loophole- since she's not actually giving to him, she's prolly going to try and grab it again and kill him. He knows what she intends, and she knows he knows. He thinks she's crazy, but she's going to give it her all at that point.

Its interesting, because there is a sort of kinship there since they're both rape victims. Indeed, he seems to want to be mentoring her. Like he suggests she sever her "shade", which I guess is sort of her like her conscience. Basically, he's trying to get her to flip her switch. Maybe its a trick, but he may really think if she does, she'll understand him better, and she might prove to be an interesting collaborator.

Since she had PTSD, he does give her a taste of what it feels like without her shade, but she immediately tells him to put it back. She needs it. He warns her that she's just being foolish and the pain will destroy her.

Back in Fillory, Penny goes to some magic river to fix his hands. He gets into an argument with a denizen who helps out. And while he was being his assholish self, for once I think it was warranted in this case. Well, as Margo said, he prolly shouldn't have been as hostile as he was. But like he said, this is some rando who indeed helped, but at the same time, he was a con man. There is no guardian of the river! Its public land, and Penny and Margo could prolly have eventually figured out to heal him on their own.

Penny refuses to pay, equating it to like those guys who show up at a parking lot claiming they're the attendants. At the same time though, river guy did help them along to figuring out what to do. Maybe they could've compromised and they could have given him a pittance of what he was asking for. So for Penny's rudeness, the guy secretly curses Penny into having has hands randomly cast spells.

Penny tries to apologize later, but the guy tells him this is his lesson to learn.

Anyways, the gang goes to make Eliot's king-ship official, so they can get into the Castle Armory. Apparently one of the Chatwins found something in there that they used to turn the tide at the Battle of the Bulge. Heh, there's a test to pass, and hilariously the guardian asks questions like, "What hit show was Tim Daly on?" and to name "that hit by the offspring of famous musicians". Which are both incredibly vague, but it cracked me up because despite Tim Daly being on plenty of shows, my answer would also have been Wings, which it was. And the hint the Knight of Crowns gave for the song was "Beach Boys", which Margo and Alice immediately knew was "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips. Well, obvie!

But its Eliot who needs to answer the questions, and they figure out the quiz is 90s themed. (the knight is all, its not the 90s!?) Eliot tells the knight to ask him anything about Swayze, and then goes into his speech at the end of Dirty Dancing before he and Jennifer Grey do their famous dance. And the knight accepts this. Though wasn't Dirty Dancing an 80s movie?

Eliot is King Eliot the Spectacular, Margo is the Destroyer, Alice is the wise, and Quentin is the moderately socially maladjusted. Heh, since its only four crowns, Penny is left out.

They get to the castle, and find the armory (which is a library), but the books they think they need are gone. It looks like they may be at Brakebills. So Eliot has to stay and rule since he is the main king, and the others go back home to hopefully find what they need. There's the hope its not like Narnia and they won't show back up like hundreds of years from now and Eliot is dead, never to see his friends again.
