Black Mirror- Interesting, so I heard with the show moving to Netflix, that bumped the run times up to a full hour as opposed to the normal 45 minutes eps they used to be. Its a little harrowing for the first ep, because that ep is easily 15 minutes too long. I mean, did we really need to see Bryce Dallas Howard's character just go through more and more crap? We got it, she got stuck on a downward spiral! As someone who gets second hand embarrassment, it was a little uncomfortable to see her suffer so much indignity, they could easily cut out some of that stuff and I still would've gotten the point.
I mean, the salient points after she started her "nosedive" were that she was too obsessed with the ratings, blinding her to how Alice Eve was just totally using her to boost her own ratings. That and meeting with Cherry Jones and realizing how meaningless the points are. Well, sort of. I mean, her whole story was that her husband's cancer didn't care about their star rating. So she literally did her damndest to raise their stars, and it just wasn't enough. And at the point, she went fuck it, what does it all mean?
And even her brother was trying to make the same point, she's slaving away and kissing ass for a life she thinks will be so great. Which yes, he was prolly right about she's just going to make herself miserable. But its one thing to not get access to "exclusives" that only high star rated people get, like apparently freaking life saving cancer treatments. But it does seem to affect regular day to day services too! I suppose Cherry Jones was getting by as a 1.4, but because the ep was so long and they wanted to show how shittily Lacey's life turned, I'm not sure you can! Because apparently being low means you don't get even treated with human decency!
I suppose the ending was "sort of" happy, because Lacey was able to let go and just have a funny conversation with the person in the cell across from her. But it would've been nice to see Naomi suffer consequences for Lacey's little rant, since she's treated Lacey like crap for most of their lives, and her trying to use Lacey (even though Lacey was doing the same thing) did basically ruin her life.
