TVD- Hmm, tonight's ep leaked early for some reason (but The Originals didn't? That's weird). Talk about a mind eff. So Damon's stuck in a groundhog day situation, which seems par for the course for a hellscape. He relives a dark moment from his past- the first time he truly had blood on his hands. (I guess he never actually killed someone in any of the battles he was in?)
He got a letter from Stefan, who was basically being a big cry baby. So Damon wanted to get let out of service, and his commander for some reason would actually let him if he went to investigate a farmhouse supposedly hiding deserters and go there to retrieve them. He goes in, but things quickly turn to shit, with his partner, the family hiding the soldiers, and the deserters all getting killed in a crazy shootout. But since this is a dream version of the real events, he sees his mom in the basement and wakes up in MF.
Bonnie explains they woke him up first because they felt he was more susceptible to going crazy and being an asshole again than Stefan would be. Only Julian stole Stefan's body while Bonnie was pulling him out. They track Julian down, and Damon goes to Julian to try and reason with him. Julian wants to compare notes on their time in the gem, and Damon is all, it wasn't a big deal. Then Julian burns Stefan's body. Of course, to no surprise this is part of the groundhog day hell.
He starts all over, tries to capture the soldiers without anyone dying, fails, wakes up, only this time Stefan's up and about. This Stefan asks Damon about his experiences in the gem. Again, Damon is chill, and his brother's insistence on asking if he felt nothing clues Damon in to it all being a dream, and he rips Stefan's heart out to go back to the beginning.
We see a glimpse of the real world, where Stefan had been pulled out already and Bonnie is failing to pull Damon out. They're wondering why they're having such a hard time getting Damon back when they got Stefan back so quickly. Stefan says he knows his brother, and its because Damon is resisting the punishment. He tells the gang they were able to reunite his soul with his body because the gem eventually broke him. Damon is still trying to get out on his own only solidifying the stone's grip on him.
Anyways, for some reason, Damon gets it in his head that the solution is to somehow get the soldiers without anyone dying, only to be unsuccessful several times as all the attempts at a peaceful solution get him killed. He eventually gets sick of it and just runs off, thinking if he gets to Stefan and has a chance to talk to him, things will work out.
Only the scenario changes, and now its him who has to hide from people hunting him for desertion. His mother hides him in the farm house, and he sees Stefan in the basement. Lily ends up getting killed by the hunters, and Stefan finally gets to the root of Damon's problem- he wanted his mommy back. Upon realizing this, we get back to the beginning-beginning where Damon gets shot in the warzone, and goes to help out a fellow soldier trapped under a cannon. Only this time the soldier is Lily.
She's done for, but basically its a chance for him to tell his mom he loved her, like he failed to do when she died in the real world. Once he expires, the gang pulls him out. But he needs more time with his mother. Thinking this is another fake scenario, he ends up snapping Stefan's neck, but outright killing Caroline (via stake), Matt (via neck snap), and Bonnie (crushing her throat/slamming her head against a wall)
We're meant to think he accidentally killed everyone, but surely even though it seems real, it has to be fake, right? Like if he hadn't staked Caroline (though I guess he could've missed her heart), and killed Matt (he doesn't wear the ring anymore right, and they implied it doesn't work anymore since the other side collapsed) and Bonnie in ways that didn't seem survivable (i.e., they couldn't give them vampire blood since they were dead-dead, not mostly-dead), then I'd believe it.
But since we know they're alive three years from now, it has to be a big scare? Because if they did do it for real, they got some explaining to do with how they're all alive in the future.
