Childhood's End- Slowly making my way through this new SyFy mini-series, only through the first part so far. The premise has been done before, but it was interesting enough. Aliens come to Earth, saying they want to fix all our problems and guide us. Like I said, its been done before, but I was wanting to see how it was done here. Things were surprisingly bloodless. I mean, they allude to some unrest in the beginning when the aliens first arrived, but in that situation, they made a localized eclipse and that seemed to cow that group.
Even Colm Meaney's group, I liked how the Overlords took them down. Exposed them for all the world to see, how they were willing to spite the world just to get rid of the aliens, and even kill their spokesperson in cold blood. That was way more effective than any demonstration of the Overlords superior technology. Like I'm sure the Overlord could've just obliterated all of them, but this was the best way to snuff this opposition.
In fact, the only time we see the aliens take action is when the one remaining Wolf from TWD (that is that same guy, right?) shoots the crippled boy, where the aliens smite him and heal the boy in one felled swoop.
But heh, I was kinda spoiled for the reveal that these guys look like demons, so as we got to the time jump, I think they went a little overboard with the foreshadowing. Like, they were already trying to paint the aliens as saviors, but in the last fifteen minutes, they just started comparing them to guardian angels and stuff. Its like, why did they randomly start using that imagery? So they could set up the big shock when they looked the opposite!
What's interesting though is that I think it makes that one girl a bigger threat than Chief O'Brien was. Like he was just an arrogant blowhard who was pissed that he felt impotent. But Peretta, with her religious convictions was understandably devastated and shocked when the Overlords revealed themselves. I'm betting to her, this is like end times anti-christ sort of stuff. She was already wary of them, and this just cements her position.
