Finding Carter- Shocking season (mid-season?) finale! First things first, Gabe seems to be taking his father's death well. Only because he's totally in denial. Like he's joking around with his friends, playing video games, supposedly nailing hotties feeling all sorry for him. But whenever any of the gang tries to have some real talk, he starts getting angry and shuts them down. Elizabeth feels totally sorry for him, wanting to be there for him, for Kyle. She even offers to let him stay with them. But he basically tells her to eff off- when she was with his dad and it seemed like she was going to leave David for him, he says she wasn't all that interested in being a family. So he doesn't want her charity now.
Also, Bird's parents show up, and they kick Max and Madison out. Possibly because Bird was all antagonistic and made her parents think they were all in a sort of polyamorous relationship with each other. Max is cool about it, he's been wanting a place of his own anyways. Which he tells Taylor can stay at any time. Because they're back together?
Alas, Madison is going. Carter is still mad at her, and her attempts to reconcile are interrupted by other matters (more on that later). But mostly, seeing Bird with her parents, with their antagonistic relationship, reminds her of her own family in a twisted way. Despite them being estranged, they're still her family. And she wants to reconcile with them, get them to accept her, because she misses them.
But yeah, the Wilsons are busy with a bombshell. Apparently Lori is competent enough to stand trial. Unfortunately, because Lori is her biological mother (who signed away her rights as part of the egg donation!!!) the whole kidnapping thing isn't as serious a charge as it would be if Lori was a total stranger. Not only that, she's trying to get custody. Which is total bullshit, just manufactured drama. Like the Wilsons are acting all worried, because "juries do weird things!" But in real life, in custody cases like this (which this shouldn't be, because again Lori signed away her rights!) they take what the kid wants into account. Obviously, Carter wants to be with the Wilsons, its obvious from the trial.
Yes, her time with Lori before she knew she was a kidnap victim was good, and she did love Lori because she didn't know any better. But just because Lori was a good mother to Carter for 13 years doesn't mean she should get custody, because she's not her legal mother!! Besides, even if the jury is insane and thinks Lori has a right to custody, 1) its not like this is some case where Lori is the biological parent and the Wilsons are strangers, David is also a biological parent and 2) Carter's 17. Their lawyers can tie up things for a year in order to make it moot. There's no way Carter would be going back to Lori.
But yeah, Lori's lawyer use Carter's visit against her. Its like, excuse Carter for caring for someone who mothered her for years! They're trying to paint the fact the Carter cares that it wasn't really a kidnapping. Carter is upset that she's messed up the case, but the Wilsons are incredibly reassuring and tell her they're all still a family. In the most hilarious part of the ep, the family has a big hug, during which Lizzie shoots a superior smirk to Lori over Carter's shoulder, all, "I win!" Which does take a little bit of wind out of Lori's sails. (Also, weird, apparently this is the first time Grant's ever actually seen Lori?!)
The last couple of minutes drop a huge bombshell. There's a guy on the witness list whom neither the Wilsons nor Carter recognize. Carter meets him in the hall during a short recess, not knowing he's the mystery witness. So she's surprised when she sees him walk in to the court from for the defense. Turns out he's Lori and David's son from their affair together. Supposedly!
Hopefully next season will explain the time line. The guy seems older than Carter and Taylor, implying the affair was before they decided to use egg donation to conceive the sisters. But I'm still not sure. Like, did David and Lori have an affair, and she became obsessed with him and somehow managed to be their egg donor? Or did Lori find out that David was the guy who fertilized her eggs and stalked him and got with him? I mean, the latter seems more likely- like I can see her being able to somehow get into the records to see who get her eggs and stalk them. Having an affair with David first and somehow manipulating things so Liz got her eggs would be too crazy.
