TV commentary:
Person of Interest- Wow, that was kinda a depressing episode. So, while the rest of the team is looking into a firefight between some men of Dominic and Elias, Reese handles a number on his own, since it was apparently a cold case of Carter's and he wanted to do it himself to feel close to her. In the former situation, Finch was worried that the machine was malfunctioning since they received no warning. But it turns out they all just happened to be at a corner store and got into a firefight. Since this show doesn't do things for nothing, but I wonder if there's more to this than they're saying.
Like Finch makes a point of saying the machine can only catch intent. If someone was crazy and a guy bumped into them in a bar and the crazy guy gets pissed and just pulls a gun and blows the bumper's head off right then and there, Finch says the machine can't pick it up. So, is this just random exposition, a nice little nugget to flesh out the machine for the audience? Is it foreshadowing that someone they know could get hurt by a random act of violence? Is the machine actually malfunctioning, but Finch found a reasonable explanation for missing something and didn't delve further? Or did the machine purposely not inform them about the incident because it has some reason for staying out of that war?
In any case, the number of the week, Reese gets the bad guy, but gets critically wounded in the process. In the process of slowly dying, he's seeing hallucinations of Carter. He fondly remembers this time when he shared something special with Carter, a brief conversation where he let her in. It was one of the few moments he felt he had with her before she died. Only, hallucination-Carter told John that never actually happened. He made it all up in his head. He may have wanted to say something, but his walls were up.
And so Joss tells him that he has to let people in- he took this number all alone, unbeknown to him outside of the watchful eyes of the machine way up in the freezing woods of Upstate NY. So no one even knows where he is to find him in time before he succumbs to his wound and the number dies of poison. I mean, it works out in the end, but hopefully he'll take her lesson to heart.
Justified- Hey, that was a pretty upbeat series finale. So the dogs track Ava to the bridge, but of course find no one there, but they do find Dewey's shark tooth necklace. Raylan realizes what it is and tries to get the deputy bringing him in to help, but no dice. At the station Art says he'll take custody, and on the drive back, Raylan convinces him what a colossal waste of time it is to drive him back to the office when he knows where he can find Ava. So Art uncuffs him, gives him his badge and gun and they're on the case.
Raylan figures out she got picked up by those dirty cops, and goes to a bar where they hang out. They learn she's being held by Markham at Loretta's barn, making Raylan fearful for both the ladies' lives. Raylan goes off alone, because he has to deal with the Boyd manhunt as Rachel, Tim and the task force corner Boyd to that one dead guy's place, and he started throwing dynamite to get away.
Speaking of Boyd, not a few minutes earlier, he gets a call from Ava. Markham had been interrogating Ava for her associate, since she couldn't have run with all that money alone, and she admits she was being helped by her uncle Zachariah. She claims he had no part in the rip-off, and he was just trying to keep her safe. She says he has the money. So Markham makes her call, and when Boyd picks up they cook up a plan, her pretending like she's talking to her uncle, and letting Boyd know she's the only one alive now who knows where the money is, so it would behoove him to help.
So, he shows up (a little late, because of the Marshals) and ends up killing Markham and his crooked cops (Boone had gone to where Ava's "Uncle" said to meet). And then ha, Raylan shows up right then and there. I loved how Boyd was all, "Damn Raylan, you have the shittiest timing in the world!"
In any case, Raylan wants to draw down on Boyd, even kicking him one of the dead guys' guns when Boyd claims he's out of bullets. Boyd says he won't draw, but promises to get out and kill him and Ava when he does. But Raylan doesn't give in to the darkness, he arrests Boyd all proper.
On the way to take Ava in, he's run off the road by Boone, who saw the aftermath with the Marshals there and then saw Raylan and Ava drive away. So he followed them, wanting to draw on Raylan. Heh, he actually foreshadowed his downfall. When he killed (well, mortally wounded) Loretta's ex-bf, he was talking about people going for a head shot and missing, because they might be wearing body armor. But yeah, turns out he's as fast as Raylan. Only he went for a head shot and missed (hitting Raylan's hat) while Raylan went center of mass and put him down. Loretta steps on his hand and prevents him from getting one last shot off at Raylan before he dies.
In the chaos, Ava drives off. Raylan says his goodbyes to the Marshals, ready to take his job in Miami now that they finally got Boyd. He offers to stay and help with the hunt for Ava, but Art tells him to get out of here before he gets stuck again.
We actually flashforward four years, where Raylan is working in Miami and has shared custody of his daughter Willa with Winona. Guess things didn't work out since she's with another man. But they seem to be on good terms. Raylan gets a random news clipping of a pic that might be (well, the sender thinks it might be, but we obviously see it is) Ava in California. Raylan checks it out and gets some unanswered questions answered.
How did she get out of Harlan? He goes through the list of people that could've helped. It wasn't Mindy or Limehouse, and he thinks it might be Duffy. We see a flashback of Duffy sneaking her out in the dog van, which is most likely what happened, but we don't know if the scene was Raylan's theory or what actually happened. Duffy disappeared after the day, some people think he's surfing in Fiji.
Anyways, Ava shows she had Boyd's son, and is willing to turn herself in, if only they make sure her son (named after her uncle Zachariah) is taken care of and Boyd never find out he exists. Raylan ends up not arresting her.
Then he goes to visit Boyd in jail- he's back to being a jailhouse preacher again. Raylan sadly informs him that Ava died in a car crash a few years ago, prolly fell asleep at the wheel while driving all night to avoid the cops. He even cooked up a fake death certificate and a fake ID Ava could've used. All to prevent Boyd from knowing she's alive and going after her if he ever decided to. Boyd is sad, because he really did love her, and then when he asks Raylan why he told him the news personally instead of just passing it along, Raylan basically says despite everything that's gone on between them, they're still like brothers.
