TV commentary:

Glee- Second to last ep! The first ep is a flashback showing how the original gleeks (Kurt, Mercedes, Tina, Artie, and Rachel) joined the club. They're actually pretty consistent with the first ep, but one weird hole I thought was with Rachel. They do the list in the order we see them sign up in the pilot (or at least the original unaired pilot) so we start with Kurt. Kurt was actually kinda a depressed and friendless, and Emma noticed him eyeing a suicide phamplet outside her office. So, she has a talk with Burt about it, and Burt tells him he should join a team, make some friends, get out of the basement and enjoy life. If he doesn't join a team, his dad will take away his sewing machine.

So, Kurt tries to make at least one friend in the lunchroom the next day. His only recourse is Rachel, who's at a table alone making signs for all the clubs she's in. (Which was a nice callback, since they only referenced it once ever in the yearbook ep, nice to see they remembered that they had her be in a whole bunch of clubs) I can't remember if they explained why she was in everything in the yearbook ep, but she says here its because she wants to be immersed in all sorts of cultures because she wants to be an actress. Kurt tells her he recognizes her from Myspace and tells her she's really talented. Since this is 2009, Rachel of course is her old kinda rude self, so when Kurt tries to connect all, "I too have toyed with the idea of a career in acting" she gets all offended saying this is serious business for her.

In any case, Rachel mentions that they're staring up the glee club again, and suggests he should join. So minor quibble- if she knows about the club already, why hadn't she been the first one to sign up on the sign up sheet? Like I figured she's be the kind of person who would have staked out the board and signed up as soon as the sheet was up there. But I digress, Kurt's not sure, but Rachel helps him practice, with "Popular" from Wicked. Heh, this time though, Rachel is doing the Glinda part, with Kurt playing Elphaba, since it makes more sense for them to do those parts in this particular song.

They make good music together, and Kurt wants them to audition together, but Rachel shuts that down real quick, saying she doesn't audition with other people, its every man for himself. Heh, they need some way to explain why they're not hanging out in the early eps. Kurt of course, auditions with Mr Cellophane as we saw in the pilot. Though we only see him from behind rather than re-creating the audition.

Anyways, Kurt sees Mercedes in the hall (ha, we have a short cameo from Matt!) and having heard she was the star of her church choir, convinces Mercedes to try out. Rachel feels threatened and starts pulling head games on her, but Mercedes recognizes her plan since she went through the same thing already in her church choir. Rachel feigns innocence, and is all, maybe she could see her sing at her church. So she does, and afterward Rachel complements her all, "You're really talented, you have a great career in R&B and Gospel ahead of you!" But again, Mercedes recognizes the bullshit, Rach trying to be all, she's really good at "black" music and trying to convince her to leave the "white" stuff to her.

Next we see Tina, who's trying to hard to be a goth, purposely faking the stutter to keep people away. Oh, and befriending Artie because its the non-conformist thing to do, embracing the "avant-garde" and "unwanted", like a boy in a wheelchair. After daring their other "goth" friends (one of whom is Sin from Arrow, HA!) to dump food on Kurt and Rachel during their conversation in the lunchroom mentioned earlier, Sin dares them to sign up for Glee club. Which, what the hell, I can't believe they would do that to Rachel and Kurt, though Artie does express shock that they actually did dump their food on them. But it seems weird to even suggest it given they were also being bullied.

In any case, Tina of course does "I Kissed A Girl" from the pilot, complete with the angry hand cross gestures at her crotch. I'm curious if they actually did recreate this, or if they were just using a longer take from old footage they did for the pilot. Artie does Ginuwine's "Pony". Which I don't think we saw in the pilot, so I think its all new.

Of course, we know how Rachel got there already, so they don't retread that ground from the pilot. Since this is before Schu blackmailed Finn into the club, he's conveniently not around for the club scenes. Where, of course Rachel and Mercedes are fighting over the first solo. As we remember from the pilot (or again, the unaired pilot), Will was going to give Artie the first solo in "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat", and Rach had a hissy fit, which caused Mercedes to fire back. Will is all, everyone will take turns doing solos, which we know wasn't the case. I mean, while Rachel and Blaine (whom we get a cameo from at the coffee place, he's just there hanging with another Dalton kid) did get the lion's share of the solos, its not like the others didn't get their chances to shine.

Anyways, cut to Rachel giving Will her ideas for male lead of the club based on yearbook photos and reasons why she should get the first solo and Puck slushie-ing her in the face. Which, great teacher there, Will, instead of punishing Puck, he just stands there dumbly in disbelief! But, he feels totally bad for Rachel, so he gives her the lead. Which upsets Mercedes, because she's all, "of course the white girl gets her way!" and she wants to quit because she thinks that's what she's doomed to, and she doesn't want to just spend the whole time playing second fiddle to Rachel. But her mom convinces her not too, and she'll get her chance, which we know she does.

Then offscreen we get to the point where Finn joins the club and then quits after seeing VA. Which is fine with Kurt, because he's all "what's with mr perfect jock horning in on our stuff!" to Mercedes. She's all, maybe he needs them for some reason, but Kurt tells her he'll prolly convince a bunch of jocks and cheerios to join, and they'll be forced out and that the only reason Rach supports him is because she has a crush on him (which inner voice Kurt is all, "So do you!"). At that, Mercedes starts taking his side, and calls a meeting sans Finn and Rachel.

Rachel finds out, and says that's not cool. She tells them maybe he joined because he's tired of being what people label him to be (a jock), and if they start excluding people, they're no better than all those jerks picking on them. Then the gleeks talk about the nice things Finn did for them and thus vote not to kick him out.

But it might be moot, since she couldn't convince Terri to not force Will to quit his job to become an accountant to support her non-existent baby. (Where we find out Howard Bamboo's dream was to become a famous singer, which makes what happens in Acafellas even more sad) We know its Emma who gets Will on the path to reconsidering by showing him the vid of his Nationals winning performance. What we learn though was she got the footage from Figgins, who was going to give him that in lieu of the raise he needed.

And the ep ends with them just reusing the old footage from the pilot, where ND was doing "Don't Stop Believin'" (ha, during the secret meeting, they were hesitant to do that song, which Finn had suggested, because they thought people might think they were doing a weird Soprano's callback), to pull at the audience's heartstrings by showing Finn again.
