HIMYM- This is why I hate the finale. As a huge Swarkles fan and someone who disliked Ted and Robin as a couple, this ending was a big eff u to me. And, it basically renders the whole final season invalid. Oh, lets spend a whole season on Barney and Robin's wedding, that despite the issues, they work. Then half an hour into the last ep, just kidding, they get divorced!
The previous ep was Ted finally getting over Robin! The parts I disliked of the last season were when they kept revisiting him pining over her. So last ep, I was all, finally, they're done with that. Apparently not!!
And Tracy was sweet, it was a difficult role to come into, and she nailed the Mother perfectly. Why make the Mother so great if apparently its always been Robin, as Penny says? His kids are pretty friggin cool with him being all, "Let me tell you how I met your mother..." and them figuring out he's actually telling the story about how he's pining after some other woman since he spent more time talking about her than their actual mother. Instead of them being all, "You dick, did you even love our mother?" they're all, "Eh, she's dead in a box somewhere, get with this other chick!"
And sure, Robin has always been worldly and a traveler, but they're basically saying she was no longer close with the group because of Tracy. When they brought the Mother in, it seemed they wanted to show not only was she perfect for Ted, that she was perfect for the whole gang. But nope, she basically bumped Robin out for a while because Robin couldn't be around them anymore.
All in all, sure, it finally makes sense why he hardly talked about the actual mother in the longest story ever, they made it about him trying to get permission from his kids to get with someone who wasn't their mother, since she's dead. Its just not the ending I wanted for these characters. Well, Marshall and Lily ended fine. But I think they crapped on the Mother, and they destroyed one of my favorite ships!
Also, why spend 22 friggin episodes on a period of 48-72 hours (granted, with some flashbacks), and then the last half hour rushing through a decade and a half?!

Date: 2014-04-02 03:08 pm (UTC)But as my friend was telling me, and I also saw this in an article I read- when they had the idea for the mother dying and him getting back with Robin, that was before they cast the Mother perfectly, before they decided to get Robin and Barney together, do all the wedding stuff and Ted finally getting over Robin. Its like after 8 or so years, the show evolved from their original idea, that the way they portrayed things, they had to know the fans would not be pleased.
And I get its their show, and they have their vision, but the way the story ended up playing out, I think they should have changed things. They didn't have to use that old footage, they coulda changed their minds and gone a different way.
