Sep. 9th, 2002 02:45 pmS: Would you like to volunteer for a double shift?
Me: No thanks, I'm good.
I didn't intend to immediately blurt that out. Besides, I think it was out of politeness that they asked, just in case I wanted to get my hands on some of that overtime before they let the other guy immediately take it since I do have seniority.
And I got this off
illiana:
1. where were you when you heard about the attacks on the pentagon and wtc?
I was actually asleep, as I was working the night shift then. Krug called me up on my cellphone and told me about it. Then I turned on my TV to CNN and saw the WTC on fire. I've said this before, but since I normally use my cellphone to call, not receive, my heart skips a beat whenever I get a call ever since then. I mean, you wake up and get a call that someone's crashing buildings into your hometown, that's pretty freaky.
2. what country/group did you suspect immediately?
America has a lot of enemies, I figured it could be anybody. I did peg it as a foreign group rather than a domestic one.
3. who were you with? how did you react?
I was alone in my room, everyone else went off to work. After calling my parents, I literally had a panic attack. I couldn't stop shaking. It was my worst nightmare ever since I was a kid come true, a terrorist attack on Manhattan.
4. who did you call first?
My mom. I don't have my dad's work number. It was a miracle I got through at all with all the phone lines being tied up. She told me she spoke to dad and he was okay, but I was still worried.
5. what did you do the rest of the day?
Well, given that I had been up all night working, I went back to sleep. I kept the TV on, though.
6. did you have any friends or family killed in the attacks?
Thankfully, no. But my dad was caught in that huge cloud of debris that you always see on TV when the towers went down. Just as he got out of his office building, one of the towers went down and the rolling cloud of debris headed towards him. That stuff went pretty far, because I walked from his office to the WTC once and its a good distance.
7. do you think 9-11 should be a holiday?
I don't know. It just seems a little too solemn to be a day of celebration, which is what holidays are really.
8. do you think even a % of the money donated really made it to the families? (loaded question)
I don't know.
9. did you feel an increased sense of patriotism? did it last?
Not increased, but that's because I've always been pretty patriotic. Some may even accuse me of being all "America, right or wrong!" That's why I didn't jump on this "patriotism bandwagon" because I've always been on it. I didn't need a tragedy such as this to make me be behind this country.
10. have you flown since the attacks? how soon did you fly again?
Of course! Something like this wouldn't stop me from flying. I'm not any safer not flying, because if its your time to go, its your time. There's nothing you can do. And hell if I'm gonna make a 20+ hour drive to see the family at Thanksgiving when I can take an hour and a half flight.
11. have you been to ground zero?
Surprisingly, no. I've been back to NYC thrice since then and things just came up that prevented me from visiting.
