Vampire Diaries- New characters! There's Pastor Young's daughter April, who was mentioned in the premiere as someone Elena used to babysit. She had apparently been shipped off to boarding school and now is back for the funeral. Talk about awkward though- I'm not sure what her dad's intention was blowing them all up, to frame vamps? Damon is getting accused left and right of killing the council (aw, he keeps an empty stool next to him for Alaric) first from Liz, then Elena. His letter to her that new vampire hunter dude stole is kinda vague and uninformative as to what his plan was. But since they cover up all the supernatural related stuff to the uninitiated, the working theory was that he had a faulty gas line in his place. So April thinks her dad accidentally killed all these people through negligence, and she's worried about all these people blaming her dad, which I wonder if there are?
The other new character is Connor, a bonafide vampire hunter who's definitely got skillz. He wears vervain soaked gloves with which to shake people's hands with to uncover vampires, carries guns with wooden bullets with mysterious etchings (that Bonnie claims are not magic) on them which he uses with quick reflexes, and has magical tattoos that only Jeremy can see. He's definitely bold, stabbing the crap out of April to get the vamps to freak out and reveal themselves, sniping Tyler in the middle of a church during the memorial? People were all, what is Tyler, suicidal going up there in the first place, but he knows staking won't kill him! Plus, he's the only one of them Connor knows is a vamp, so he was the perfect distraction. It is indeed curious how they're gonna cover that up?!
So with the whole vampires having a heightened overriding personality trait, Elena's is compassion. So, Stefan doesn't want her to feed on humans and possibly lose control and kill someone, because it would be too much for her. Unfortunately, possibly because she's the doppleganger, she can't keep down animal blood. But because she's so compassionate, she doesn't want to tell Stefan and make him all worry. But she does share with Damon, who feeds her his blood (which Stefan is totally pissed at when he finds out later, treating it like her cheating on him) But she tosses that up too. Also, blood bags. It seems only blood from the vein will satiate her hunger. So Matt volunteers and Elena feeds on him in the middle of the church (in a kinda hot way) is finally fulfilled.
She goes to save April, and Caroline is able to help her control her urges around bloody April, and teaches her how to glamer, making her glamer April to calm her down.
In the end, Stefan decides they've lost so many people recently, they need to have a memorial of their own for Elena's parents (both sets), and Aunt Jenna, and Caroline's dad, and Tyler's dad, Bonnie's grams, Stefan's "Uncle", Anna, Lexi, Vicki, and Alaric. Damon has no time for such foolishness though. (Plus, how awkward is it given that he was the one who killed half those people?) But we all know he's a secret softie, so while he blows off their lantern lighting memorial, he goes to talk over Alaric's grave. And the show twists the knife by having Alaric's ghost there, listening to Damon's venting, obviously unable to re-assure Damon. But he does miss Damon as much as Damon misses him.
