I think he might be so fascinated with blood and looking at his slides so often that he might recognize the pattern of the blood on the slide.
Also while writing this, the idea popped into my head that he might enjoy looking at his slides so much that he does something unseemly while doing so. And since I had a disturbing thought, I figured I'd inflict it on you as well.
