TV commentary:
Vampire Diaries- Holy crap, talk about an intense episode! Definitely didn't see any of that happening. So the plan to lure back Klaus involves staking Mikael. Because of Stefan's compulsion, they have to do it for realz, so Stefan can indeed truthfully say that Mikael was indeed staked. But he can conveniently leave out the part where they revive him right afterward.
Anyways, given the extreme danger everyone is in, Elena doesn't trust anyone, even Beks. Klaus is still her brother, so they can't know for sure when things get intense which side she'll be on. Still, the two girls share a nice moment, with Rebekah being all she never had a chance to do the high school dance thing. Elena even gives her back her mum's necklace... right before daggering her in the back. rjv('Cold blooded!') How very Katherine of her!
Given the imposing task ahead of them, they try to control even more variables. Damon tries to get the dance shut down, by getting the high school gym flooded. Unfortunately, sired Tyler just moves the dance to his house. But the gang goes with it. The gang being Damon and Elena, as they don't really trust Stefan or Tyler, and Caroline, Bonnie and Matt apparently aren't involved in any of the shenanigans, while Alaric and the Germ are nowhere to be seen this ep. Mikael takes care of the Stefan sitch by feeding on him which does "kill" Stefan, but not permanently. Apparently its no different than getting his neck broken. (the fact that Mikael feeding on a vamp doesn't lead to their true death is actually a clue to a certain twist later in the ep, but more on that later). Mikael also gives Damon the stake carved from the original white oak (which is stronger than a dagger just dipped in the ash) since unlike Mikael, he can enter Tyler's abode.
Unfortunately, Klaus is no fool, and he brought all those little hybrids he created on his road trip around the country to the party. Tyler tries to warn Caroline away (because he says "Klaus is always two steps ahead of his enemies". Amusingly enough Klaus himself tells the gang he's only one step ahead of them at all times), but since she won't listen, he vervains her and has Matt take her away. Needless to say, she's pretty pissed later, thinking they're at an impasse in their relationship, because she can't trust him while he's sired to Klaus, and how is he okay with being Klaus' lapdog? But, the whole not having to turn anymore and go through that pain is worth being kinda a slave to Klaus' whims. He was already a slave to the moon, but with Klaus as his master now, he doesn't have to turn anymore. So, he feels it is what it is, and hopes Care can be cool with it. But alas, she can't be, so they're officially broken up.
While Klaus is suspicious, he's not sure, but eventually one of his hybrids tells him Mikael is there to see him, so he knows he was tricked. So, they meet at the Lockwood doorway, with Mikael unable to get in without an invite. Klaus plans on having his hybrids tear Mikael apart, which won't kill him permanently, but will keep him down. Mikael however, shows he can compel hybrids, though prolly not quick enough so that the other fifty hybrids there don't kick his ass. But Mikael has another ace up his sleeve- he has Elena hostage, and threatens to kill her. Its at this point I realize its actually Katherine, but the audience doesn't know that yet. (Though its kinda cheap that she's okay, and it wasn't a big thing, she just shows up all fine)
Anyhoo, Klaus calls Mikael's bluff, and Mikael (who has been berating Klaus the whole time for being such a loser) stabs "Elena" in the back. Needless to say, all hell breaks loose. Damon goes after Klaus with the super-stake, while Kat reveals herself and tosses vervain grenades at the hybrids. Just when Damon is ready to deal the killing blow, Stefan tackles him. Klaus uses the reprieve to get the stake and kill Mikael. Seeya Mikey, we hardly knew ya! For Stefan's help, Klaus rewards him with his freedom. I was worried that Klaus was playing word tricks again, and was going to be all, "I grant you freedom... from this mortal coil!" or something and try to kill Stefan, but he's true to his word.
With their only chance to kill Klaus literally up in flames (as Mikael burst into flames after being staked, taking the super stake with him) Damon is pissed and distraught. Not only b/c they lost their chance, but because Stefan screwed them. But Elena is there to comfort him, and actually suggests, that Stefan is lost to them forever, and maybe they should just let him go. Just when it looks like things might go... somewhere, Kat calls with the cockblock. She let's them know she's run for the hills (not that they didn't expect that)
But then after she hangs up, its revealed Stefan is in the car with her. And then comes the denouement. We flashback to Kat being the one to revive Stefan, and then she flashes back in the flashback to a convo she had with Klaus at the party. Which we the audience where privy to some of (where we thought she was Elena at the time) , but the flashback-flashback reveals Klaus telling "Elena" if they do manage to ever kill him, he has a big time failsafe in place. One last order his hybrids will carry out if Klaus ever dies, to slaughter Damon. So, she revived Stefan to warn him, and gives him a choice- they can go through with the original plan, and kill Klaus, which will get him his freedom, but kill Damon. Or he can stop their plan and take out Mikael.
Obviously, as we saw, he chose to save his brother, which Kat counted on, because just like Elena and Damon figured out last ep, despite the compulsion, Stefan loves his brother very much. Surprisingly enough, Kat had no ulterior motive, she just honestly loves the boys, despite everything, so she gave them their best chance to both survive. And heh, Damon and Elena are totes unaware of this, so as far as they know, Stefan was just a dick.
Which leads to the big twist of the ep. Now that Mikael is truly dead, apparently Klaus can now undagger his family. Because now that Mikael isn't hunting them down, the family can get along now? Its still curious who these other family members are, Rebekah is still staked at the Salvatore manse, but there are still several coffins. We know one is Elijah, but last ep we only saw the parentals, Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah in the flashbacks. So who the hell are in all these other boxes? I mean, it was just the three of them who held hands and promised it would be them "always and forever" (is it me, or are Klaus and Rebekah the least sibling-ly acting brother and sister ever? Like I wouldn't be shocked to find out there was incest going on there!)
Unfortunately for Klaus, Stefan absconded with the coffins, and when Klaus threatens to kill him and everyone else, Stefan is all, "then you'll never find them!" and gloats over how he outwitted Klaus. Which seems crazy, like why the hell is poking the beehive?
Anyways, January can't come sooner! I'd like to see what Klaus ends up doing, how Bekah will react when she inevitably is revived to Elena's big betrayal, and what "letting go of Stefan" will lead to with Damon and Elena.
