Saw Pineapple Express last night with the roomie and [livejournal.com profile] clevemire. It was pretty hilarious. And surprisingly violent! I did think they slightly frumped up hottie Amber Heard (whom you may recognize from the CW's short lived Hidden Palms or that silly "Karate Kid meets Fast and the Furious" for the oughts movie, "Never Back Down" with Volchok and that LAWKI guy. Not to be confused with Olympian Amanda Beard) a little in her first scene, but the rest of the movie she was back to her normal level of hotness. And what's with commercials showing scenes that weren't actually in the movie?

Owel, as I was getting my ticket, I was perturbed when I heard some people saying some movie was already sold out. I was worried, because Pineapple Express was the only new movie coming out that day. But it wasn't the sold out movie. Were they referring to Dark Knight? Seriously, I liked the movie, but how is it still selling out?!

Some Avatar talk: Of the elements, it feels like water is the element the makers seem to favor. I dunno, it seems to me the stuff Katara pulls is way more impressive than a lot of stuff anyone else does. I mean, Toph bending metal is impressive in that world, but for the most part Earth bending is kinda blah, just hitting people with rocks and rocky structures. Same with fire, though fire at least looks more impressive because a lot of times they're combining it with fancy martial arts attacks. With the earth folks its like hit or stomp the ground and make a stone pillar come out at some other point or levitate a boulder or some other big object made of rock and send it flying towards an opponent.

But yeah, as I've said before, I think they've made water a little too powerful with the insta ice thing and making it able to slice through steel and rock like a hot knife through butter! Of course, I'm going by what we see Katara do, and your average water bender might not be able to be so lethal. I do find it interesting that the only "evil" technique we see is a water one. I mean, they initially portray fire as the "bad" element, but as Aang says when he and Zuko meet those dragons, its just energy. The bloodbending thing seems to be considered distinctly evil.

But speaking of fire and water, I'm definitely in favor of Katara and Zuko. (Its kinda sad knowing nothing comes of them) You know how big a fan I am of those opposites attract kinda couplings, and you don't get more opposite than that. He's fire, she's water. He's a surly bad-boy, she's cute and sweet and motherly (unless you piss her off). He's a prince, she's just a tribal girl.

She kinda hates him when he joins up with Team Avatar. Okay, no kinda, she pretty much hates his guts and has no qualms showing it. But it seems to me a lot of it is not only because he's fire nation and they murdered her mom, but because his betrayal the previous season stung so much. They were bonding over losing moms, and its the typical good girl trying to save the bad boy thing. Katara thought she was getting Zuko to reveal this good side of him that no one else knew about, and that if she healed his scar she could heal him of the evil within. But she didn't get the chance. And then she must've felt so foolish when he ends up siding with his sister over them. If they had more time in the series, and the characters were a little older, it would've been amusing to see a triangle between those two and Aang. I mean, Zuko's gonna become the Fire Lord, Aang's the Avatar, throw a girl in between them and you might just have a kinda repeat of what happened between Sozin and Roku.

Speaking of Avatar, and Katara and Zuko, I knew she was voiced by Egg, but I didn't realize he was Rufio. Who was of course the guy who played the main character in that "The Debut" movie my family wanted to watch because it was all about Filipino culture in an American society or something. Oh, and I had mentioned Azula sounding a little like a more sinister Paris from Gilmore Girls, but I forgot I recently learned that Ty Lee was voiced by the Tana chick who was Paris and Rory's roommate their freshman year at Yale. Its kinda a thin connection!

Anyways, saw this list of The 50 sexiest videos of all time. It has Fiona Apple's Criminal (which I think is my pic for the sexiest video ever, but they only have it at #23) on there, so the list makes some sense. But some of the choices are kinda baffling. "No Sleep 'til Brooklyn"? "Take on Me"? "Dancing in the Dark"?! They have Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" as #1. I have a confession to make. While people claim its sexy, I never really thought so. I mean people claim those chicks are so hot, but that overly made up look doesn't do it for me. Shania Twain's homage (or was it a parody?) to it, her vid for "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" was way sexier. Because of her, not because she switched the chyx out for guys.

I'm also confused that they chose Aerosmith's "Cryin" over "Crazy". Crazy not only had Alicia Silverstone, but Liv Tyler, back when they both were pretty hot. And it has schoolgirl outfits and faux lesbianism! They argue that they felt Crazy was a rip off, as if they were trying to limit it to only one Aerosmith song on the list, but they already had "Sweet Emotion" on the list as well. And they had two Chris Isaak songs and two Shakira songs on the list and if the argument was that Crazy and Cryin' were too similar what about those two peformers? Both Chris Isaak videos are just some supermodel (Helena Christiansen in "Wicked Game" and Laetitia Casta in "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing") rolling around being sexy, and the Shakira videos are all about her gyrating! Not that they don't deserve to be on the list, but if you have repeats like that, surely they could've knocked off one of their nonsensical choices for Crazy.

I was clicking through the list of all these shitty newer videos getting ready to be angry that they had omitted "Cradle of Love", but much to my chagrin it was #6, so I have to give them some credit. It does seem obvious from some of the choices though that they are counting men in their "sexiness" rating, which makes the list a little bit wonky.

Yeah, I had almost forgotten about that one, that's a really good one. But scantily clad jailbait knocking on your door wanting to "play a tape"? cliffV('What's up with that?!') Its total BS, because when does that ever really happen? Its like these pr0ns where hottie nymphets knock on the door selling cookies or raffle tickets to raise money for new cheerleading uniforms or whatever and they forgot to wear underwear... with sexy results! Of course, at least that's a story. Nowadays, they're even lazier, and they just make the girl the neighborhood slut who just wants $20.

Oh, and if he's a rich yuppie, why does he have so many locks on his door? Surely he would live in an area where one wouldn't need so many locks!

[identity profile] clevemire.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Gentrification! Rich yuppies live in the city now, just blocks away from dangerous minorities.

And noticeably absent from that list is Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer. Dancing chickens are hawt.

But isn't that what doormen are for, to keep such people out of the building?!

Of the elements, it feels like water is the element the makers seem to favor

Water seems the most powerful in the setting just because it is the most versatile. The only thing it can't top or duplicate is Air Bending's flying stuff. It seems like it can emulate pretty much every other powerful trick of all the other Bending types in some way or other. However, don't underestimate Toph's metal bending. When you see the series finale, you'll understand.

Also, I think Katara's supposed to be way more powerful than most other Water Benders. She was hardly trained when she got to the Northern Water Tribe, and she was almost the equal of their master. Also, I think the freezing thing is either a personal quirk of hers that most others can't do or something that is an advanced technique, like Fire Bending's Lightning Bending, that she just happened to be a natural at.

Speaking of Katara, I consider her a "princess". If Yue is/was princess of the Northern Water Tribe, then Katara is princess of the Southern Water Tribe, since her grandmother was the founder of the tribe (making Sokka a prince, too), and her Father/Mother seem to be the current rulers. And just because their society in the SWT isn't huge and super high-tech doesn't mean she can't be a princess.

That's IMO, of course. There is no canon to back that up, just circumstantial details. But just because they haven't said it doesn't make it untrue (IMO).

saw this list of The 50 sexiest videos of all time [...] They have Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" as #1

That's retarded. That video isn't sexy, it's just eye-candy. Sexy involves overt or implied sex, etc etc. Wicked Game and other vids with people romping around naked or making out and pushing clothes off or having sex but not showing the naughty bits is sexy.

No, I agree, I think Katara is kinda a princess, but I would still think there would be a class distinction. I mean, what's the Southern Water Tribe compared to the Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom?

Technically, the nations are supposed to be balanced with one another, but the water tribes seem to be kinda crappy compared to the others. Even the Air Nomads, who are basically extinct have those fancy temples at the four corners of the world. But Sokka and Katara's village is barely a bunch of igloos surrounded by an ice wall, and the northern ice city was better but still seemed podunk compared to any of the earth or fire nation cities we see. Or were they once bigger, but the fire nation picked on them more than the Earth Kingdom once the Air Nomads were wiped out?

I think it might've looked more balanced, if instead of just having a Northern and southern tribe, those tribes consisted of many smaller tribes the size of Sokka and Katara's village.

[identity profile] turdburgler.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
In an interview somewhere, the creators have stated the following (paraphrased):

- The Air Nomad society is the smallest, and therefore almost all if not all of the Air Nomads are also Air Benders (highest percentage, implication is 90% or higher)

- The Earth Kingdom is the largest (most populous), therefore very few of their citizens are earth benders (lowest percentage). This is also why (huge population) their cities are so huge and awesome.

From what is shown, I would say the Fire Nation is the second largest, making them have the second lowest percentage of benders. However, the Fire Nation seems to have worked around that issue given Mei and Ty Lee's abilities, and also how badass Zuko is without even using bending at all.

The Souther Water Tribe, I want to say (but there is no evidence to support this other than logic), is bigger than is shown, but the reason more of it wasn't shown was because Katara/Sokka live in the primary village, and all of the antics that happen on-screen in the SWT that are relevant to the story happen in their particular village. (otherwise, what's the point of sending 10 men to war with the entire Fire Nation -- they must have more villages)

It wouldn't make sense to me that their village was the only one in the SWT, especially if it has been stated by the creators that the Air Nomads were smallest (because size-wise, as shown on screen, they appear to be about the same size). And there seem to be very few members of the SWT that are benders, which would seem to indicate their numbers are much more than was shown on-screen. This part about the SWT is obviously all IMO. :D

Cryin > Crazy song wise.

Haha... I used to think the guy at the end of Crazy was Christian Bale!

Christian Bale lookalike > Stephen Dorff?

[identity profile] geebs.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, you mean the farm boy they went skinny dipping with who like picks his nose?!

Cryin' also had Sawyer from Lost as the guy who tried to rob Alicia Silverstone.

Yeah, around the same time, CB had the longish floppy hair for Swing Kids, Little Women. So... It kinda looked like him, but now I can clearly tell it's not.

I miss Aerosmith videos... They were rather amusing. Those, Janie's Got A Gun, etc.
