like, what's your major?

I should just start lying when total strangers come up to me and ask me what my major was. Because when I mention chemical engineering they start asking what does "chemical X" do? I don't know! They don't make you memorize everything, you usually learn about specific/less common ones when you start working with them. Having never worked in industry, my knowledge is limited to the widely known stuff like nitroglycerin and table salt! And if they don't play the "tell me everything about this chemical" game, then they ask if you know how to make drugs or bombs. No and no!

I meant the figurative chemical X, not actual chemical X!
