TV commentary:

Friday Night Lights- Its nice to see that even with the significant cast changes over the years, the show manages to keep the same heart and "realness" it had from the beginning.

I was actually pretty amused by the beginning. The stuff with the Garritys and the Taylors after church was so true to life. God, if I were Buddy Jr, I would be so mortified if my parents started making jokes about "how we'd make such a cute couple" in front of a smoking hot babe like Julie.

Lots of good stuff this ep. Heh, when they first had Vince's dad back, the audience was prolly counting the eps until he went back to his old ways and screwed up Vince's life. But surprisingly enough, its Vince who ends up pulling him back to the life. Its an inherent flaw with this show though, that since it only covers the football season, they gloss over all that time that passes as if nothing really happened. Like this Kennard guy, how long has it friggin been, he's only now asking for his money?! Its been a year! In any case, now he wants to be paid, even going so far to threaten Jess and make threats about burning down the BBQ joint.

Vince is at a loss of what to do, he did get the money for a good cause (to send his mom to rehab), but that put him under Kennard's thumb and he had to do some shady things. So he's reluctant to go to someone like Coach and admit that. So since he couldn't go to that father figure, he had to go to his real father, who said he'd take care of it. Now, I don't know if Vince is just deluded, but I can't believe he wouldn't think his father "taking care" of it wouldn't involve shadiness. Indeed, his father kicks the crap out of Kennard, which is like one of the funniest things I've ever seen on this show. Its like, how friggin big is Vince's dad?! Kennard looked like a dwarf to him. I will give points to Kennard for having the balls to stand up to a giant like that, but it was also incredibly stupid and he rightly got the stuffing beat out of him.

But dammit, obviously violence leads to more violence. So now these next few eps I'm gonna be in the edge of my seat, worried about Kennard getting revenge and someone getting killed in the crossfire!

And 5 years ago, if you told me Billy and Mindy would end up being such significant characters with real growth, I woulda been skeptical! Tim taking the rap for Billy really turned Billy's life around. I forgot about Tim's silly plot of land, and its kinda sweet that Billy is actually continuing to pay for it so it'll be waiting there for Tim. But yeah, he's starting to grow into a real coach the way he helped out Luke. Coach was kinda hesitant to bring Billy in when the season started, but you could tell how proud he was when Coach was late and Billy warmed the team up.

As for Mindy, she's still looking out for Becky, even warning her about the folly of pining away for Tim and trying to hook her and Luke back up. Though was she living under a rock? I thought the abortion thing was a big enough deal that it made Tami a pariah in the town, but Mindy was apparently unaware of what went down. And wait, the way Becky eyed Mindy's tips, are they implying she might think of going the stripper route? ctv('The plot thickens...')

But wow, Julie Taylor is a huge brat! Fake crashing her car to avoid going back to school? Its like, suck it up! So you banged your married TA and his wife showed up and embarrassed you in front of the entire dorm! Like anyone will care in a few weeks, they'll find something else to gossip about. She was as ridiculous as Kennard trying to be all threatening to Vince's ginormous dad! I mean, "Maybe I jumped into this college thing too quickly?!" What the frak is that supposed to mean?! She's supposed to be a smart girl, thousands of kids go straight from high school to college without problems. Grow up, you big baby! And she had the gall to be all, "Maybe I should take a trip to Europe!" To wander around being all pretentious and acting like she's so friggin' cool because she's seeing all this "culture"? What's so great about other countries!? But seriously though, with what friggin money? Its like when she apologized about the car and said she'd pay for the damages. How!? She has no job!

Although even though she's broken her parents hearts, at least in the end, she acknowledges she colossally frakked up and apologized to her dad for disappointing him. Since he did raise her better than that. Though she was also prolly hurt the way her dad was looking at Gracie Bell, all "Crap, how do I make sure this one doesn't turn out like her big sister!"

Actually, who are the "three kings" "Kingmaker" Eric Taylor made? I tried pausing on the magazine cover, and the bottom one is definitely Vince, but the other two are Panthers, and both white. I mean, would one of them be Street, even though he got crippled? And while Saracen lead the S1 Panthers to victory, I didn't think he was supposed to be that great. I mean, I figured they would be considered Kings if they had a phenomenal HS career and went on to at least have a decent college career. But Street didn't have that, and Saracen didn't play football after he graduated.
