Ah, so there is a new upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender project. No, not a sequel to M Night's movie, a follow-up to the original series. Its supposed to take place 70 years in the future and center on the Avatar after Aang, a water-bender named Korra.
Bah, I was hoping for something with the original characters. And for some Zutara of course! Supposedly one of the characters in this is Aang's son, but no word on who his mother is. Who knows, maybe they'll be all sneaky plot wise, and we'll find out that its not Kitata, and that she ended up with Zuko. Or even more amusing, that there's a rift between the fire nation and whatever the hell place Aang decided to reside in because he and Zuko got into a tiff over Kitara.

Oh, and there's no way they're not going to at least reference the previous series' characters, if not show them outright as cameos. I mean, all the main characters' parents (an on occasion, grandparents) were shown at one point in the series, so it makes cents, especially given they were featured in the previous series. Creators can't help self-referencing like that (you see it a lot in manga).
As "meh" as the movies are, that is where I'm hoping they'll go for the Zutara angle. I am pretty sure the end of the last tv series is gonna just be how it is. It's a kids' show after all, they're not gonna ret-con it. And Aang is the main character, so there's no way he's not gonna get the girl. But it's too bad, Zutara was such a wasted potential. I've always been a fan of opposites (opposing elements) attracting and all that. :)
So anyway, the question is... WHEN?!?!

Well, I'm sure they'll reference previous characters and have some show up (though after 70 years they'd be old-ass). Though I guess since there's a new Avatar, Aang died. But they had previous Avatars appear in his dreams, so I guess he can show up that way.
Interesting though, they've shown people can live pretty long (since Bumi knew Aang before he got frozen), but since only 70 years have passed, and less that since the girl had been Avatar for a while (I can't remember if the new Avatar is born when the old one dies, or if its like BtVS where there's a potential Avatar, and he inherits the powers once the old one dies) Aang died in his 60s. So I wonder if Aang died due to conflict rather than natural causes, since he could potentially live pretty long (though I guess he was already old when they found him since he was frozen in ice).

In the movie, Aang chose toys to determine he was the Avatar (just like in the tv series), but in the movie specifically it was said that he chose the previous avatar's toys. I vaguely recall the tv series saying he choose the toys of the avatar (meaning, there are four toys that a child can choose that indicate he's the avatar, not four toys that belonged to the previous avatar). It was a lot more vague in the tv series, and as such it doesn't necessarily imply that the previous avatar was dead when Aang was taking his toy-test.
"With the guidance of the previous avatar Aang's son Tenzin" -- well, I'm guessing Korra isn't going to be Kataang's child then, which is fine. If avatars start descending from one another, it'll start to become a monarchy of avatars, which might make the populace somewhat upset.
Although funnily enough, I guess all future Air Nomad avatars will be descendants of Aang's... they'll have to be, since at one time he was the last airbender! Although, I've always believed that since Aang can take away bending powers, he can probably bestow them too. So, if that's the case, he could imbue airbending into a new set of people if he wanted. But we'll see, I guess.
