TV commentary:
Degrassi- So even though Friday was the series finale, they actually had a two hour movie which I thought was supposed to be the real finale. Only I had totally forgotten and was only reminded last night that Degrassi isn't actually over, its just moving to Netflix. It is funny that they're showing all these interviews with the cast over the years, like its the end, but apparently not!
Anyways, onto the movie. So the main things to know are this. Mr Hollingsworth gets Frankie an internship at the Mayor's office, which the other interns are annoyed at, seeing her as some rich daddy's girl. Maya also is trying for a job. Well, two. First, as a life guard with Zig and Tiny. Unfortunately she fails the test because she moves the pretend the victim without check for a spinal injury. Which is understandable, you don't want to further injure someone hurt on the beach, but as she says, at least she did something, whereas Zig and Tiny were busy ogling the string bikini clad volunteer, named Gloria.
Maya makes the mistake of saying that it wasn't what she really wanted to do anyways, saying she wants to get a babysitting job with some music producer lady in the hopes of parlaying that into an internship in the music industry. So, Gloria steals the job.
Thirdly, Hunter, Tristan, Grace and Zoe are in summer school for science (Zoe is taking it because she failed, Grace I guess is doing it for a better grade, which is apparently something you can do in Canada?!) with a creepy seeming science teacher named Mr Bain played by Scott Thompson from KitH.
The unifying thread is Gloria, who disappears. Ha, after Maya gets Lola to cast a curse on her! Which, interesting, I didn't realize Lola is Latina. But isn't that incredibly weird, like why the hell would she know curses?! Gloria happens to be the girlfriend of one of Frankie's fellow interns, whom she develops a crush on, even though she just got back with Winston. But yeah, with Gloria's disappearance, the babysitting job is available again for Maya to take.
Also, Frankie and Zoe/Grace separately think Mr Bain is responsible for her disappearance, Frankie because on her first day of work he tried to give her a ride (and seemed incredibly weird and creepy to her), and Zoe and Grace because of a little bit of silliness. So, Grace and Zoe are lab partners, and Grace pulls a little trick where she says she's running a current through Zoe's brain to stimulate brain function. Zoe ends up getting an A on her test, and is upset that Grace lied to her, but then Zoe is all, "hey I proved you actually were smart!"
Anyways, the actual main plot between those two is them develop feelings for each other. So, Zoe joins Grace in some outdoorsy star gazing thing, but at this point in the movie, she doesn't realize she likes Grace. She claims she just think the club is keen, much to Tristan's chagrin since he was wanting to hang out with Zoe for the summer. With Gloria disappearing, he thinks its dangerous for her to go into the woods with a seemingly creepy guy like Mr Bain. For some reason, to prove he's not interested in her in that way, she makes a pass at him. Unfortunately, because of all of her stuff over the past year and a half, he kicks her out of the club, not wanting anything even resembling impropriety.
So Zoe is actually hurt that she screwed up her chance to be in the club, and Grace is all, if she tells the teacher what happened, he'll understand. So they try, but then find pics of Gloria in his office. And then they break into his truck and find pics of more missing girls. So they call the cops on him, but the cops don't find anything. As we find out later, he has all those files on missing girls because he thinks of himself as an amateur detective and was trying to solve these disappearances.
Anyways, I thought the Gracevas stuff was cute. At some point, Miles tells Zoe its obvious Grace has a crush on her. Zoe is all, Grace is not gay, and she knows Zoe's not. Miles, being either bi or pan, is all love the person not the gender and says there's something there. Again, for some reason, Zoe goes about things the insane way. She starts going out with Miles, I guess to see if Zoe really does like her. And from Grace's jealousy, she's right. But then, I guess because Zoe's still trying to reconcile her sexuality, the three of them are hanging out and she starts tongue wrestling with Miles. Grace doesn't want to be a third wheel. So Zoe is all, "Oh, we can make out too!" and of course Grace gets pissed, thinking Zoe's trying to rope her into a threesome for her rich boyfriend. They get into a fight, which ends with Zoe claiming Grace is the one in love with her.
In the end of their plot, they reconcile after helping solve the Gloria business (more on that later) using some stuff they learned in science class. And then Zoe kisses Grace and tells her she like her, but for some reason tells her to contemplate this and they can deal with it when school starts back up.
Anyways, the other characters- Frankie gets close to this Logan guy, who's all sad about his missing girlfriend. And then he gets a random demand, for 10K! He convinces Frankie he can't call the cops else they'll hurt Gloria, and get her to give him the money (Frankie and Hunter's b-day gift from their grandpa). Then he disappears, and she freaks out something happened to him. But it becomes clear he's snowing her, especially when he asks for 5k more and then calls her a rich bitch when she refuses. So she realizes what a fool she was, and unfortunately, because she was drawn to him and admits to Winston she doesn't know which one she wants to be with, he dumps her.
Finally, the Maya plot- she reluctantly wins the kids she was babysitting over, but then ends up getting fired when she tells their mom she should spend more time with them. Zig was also getting mad at her because she was getting overworked at the babysitting job and not spending enough time with him. So he was happy when she was fired and had more time for him. But then he ends up being too busy himself to join her on her quest when she thinks she spots Gloria. Ha, she was feeling guilty because she thinks her disappearance was her fault because she had Lola cast that curse.
But she ends up being grabbed by the real kidnapper... Logan! It was all a ruse to bilk Frankie out of her money so he and Gloria could run away because her parents hate him. (BTW, its because he's a university grad going out with a HS junior/senior, which makes the whole thing with Frankie even creepier since she just finished her freshman year). As mentioned earlier, the gang figures out where they are thanks to stuff they learned in science class. And they actually listen to Winston finally, who had kept saying they should call the police. So they do, Maya is rescued, but Gloria ends up in juvie since she was an accomplice, even though in the end it sounds like she felt things went out of control and just wanted everything to be over.
Anyways, producer lady ended up taking Maya's advice. She doesn't hire Maya back as a babysitter, but as an intern at the record company, to help her there so she can spend more time at home.
