Of the opera?!

Just finished up s2 of Avatar. The show continues to be quite good. I like all the new characters they introduced for s2. Toph is both hilarious and awesome. She's a funny little bad ass. I love the constant blind jokes. Azula is great also, so mean and conniving and cruel. What a bitch! And I mean that as a complement. Her little crew is awesome also. I love Mai's gothy, depresso attitude. And Ty Lee is a cute little bad-ass with a hilarious personality. Honestly, I think she's the most bad-ass out of all of them- yeah, she can't bend like Katara, Toph, or Azula, but that makes her abilities all the more impressive!

Its like Azula will be tossing about fire and lightning and Mai will be throwing knives left and right, but even though sometimes people die (poor Jet, he was cool looking!) on the show, its still a cartoon. So they can't really have them scoring direct hits all the time- Aang and Iroh are supposed to be pretty tough, and they were out and in bad condition upon getting shocked by Azula. They can't have her killing people left and right! So yeah things will be set ablaze and Mai's opponents invariably end up being in a sitch where she can pin their sleeves to the walls or floors with her blades. But when its Ty Lee's turn its like they drop her into the middle of a couple dozen earth benders and she'll pull off her pressure point stuff, tumbling all over the place with her acrobatics, and she'll take them all out.

I do find Ty Lee's and Mai's friendship with Azula interesting and weird. I mean, its a combo of actual friendship and fear. Its like they change in Azula's presence. When she was recruiting Ty Lee, and she made that thinly veiled threat that she would continue to watch Ty Lee's show and thus force the circus folks to make the stunts more and more dangerous, its like she knew she had no choice, but she still kept that bubbly attitude when she accepted Azula's offer. And then with Mai, who seems like a nice enough girl under that gothy exterior, when they were gonna trade King Bumi for her little brother, with a little prodding from Azula, she was all, "that's not a fair trade, Bumi's a king!" and reneged on the deal. Obviously team Avatar's not gonna actually kill her brother, but they don't know that!

Owel, Zuko looks way cooler with the full head of hair as opposed to the braided tail. I do feel sorry for the poor guy. But speaking of hair, is it me, or does Katara look way hotter when she has her hair down and not in those weird loopies? Seriously, who would wear their hair like that?! I would find a Zuko-Aang-Katara triangle awesome, but I don't think they're gonna do that, I think they're pairing Zuko off with Mai, since they both actually like each other. Those two would definitely make a hilarious couple, with her gothiness and his surliness. But Zuko-Katara would be intriguing. I'm just not feeling the whole Aang-Katara thing. Yeah, they care a lot for each other, but its kinda vanilla.

I'm definitely surprised at Sokka's ladies man status. When they first introduced him, I thought he'd be more comical with the ladies, like he'd talk a big game but not be successful, but geez, its like every girl who appears in more than a couple of eps who isn't his sister (or crazy or into Zuko like Azula and Mai respectively) has a thing for him. Suki and Princess Yue obviously, but Ty Lee has an obvious thing for him, and I think its pretty clear Toph likes him also. Of course, of the pickings of the guys their age, besides him, you have Aang, Zuko, Jet, and the rest of his freedom fighters- who let's be frank, are all kinda weird. And Smellerbee is actually a girl (which was one of the funnier jokes on the show). I guess Katara did try all three (if you count that moment where she offered to heal Zuko's scar).

But they definitely have a lot of interesting characters. As I've said before, what really gets me into a show is when they have a rich depth of background characters. I mean, cabbage man is funny, but they have a lot of recurring characters, with all sorts of weird ties. Like the Rough Rhinos being the ones who killed Jet's parents. I mean, they don't have to tie secondary characters together like that, but it make the world feel more real when they do.

Heh, even though there were plenty of other animal hybrids besides Appa and Momo, I didn't really notice it until second season. So I found the whole Bosco being just a normal bear hilarious, because at that point of the series I was just wondering if all the animals were weird combo. So I thought it was hysterical when they heard about the Earth King's party for his bear and they were all, "Is it a skunk bear?" and all the gang was going through all sorts of other bear-combos and it turns out, nope, its just a normal bear.

Thankfully, I've gotten a hold of s3 (by hook and by crook) so I don't have to wait until the box set comes out in September to finish things up. I mean, I was dreading having to wait a month, but now I don't have to.
