Went and saw Force Awakens with the usual suspects. It was pretty good, way better than Episodes I-III, and a more worthy successor to the original trilogy.
But you know, this movie highlights how very few women and PoCs were in the original. Because like there are just chicks and PoCs all over the place. Like control rooms, the techs are very heterogeneous! Heck, Brienne pf Tarth isn't even the only female storm trooper! There are random storm trooper extras who are girls.
But heh, is it racist to wonder if the one Mon Calamari they show is Admiral Ackbar, or the one Sullustan X-wing pilot is Nien Nunb? I mean, just because its one of those creatures doesn't mean its them. Although looking at the credits now, it was them!
But I digress, it is a Star Wars movie for the modern day. I mean, even the new generation leads, the "Luke" of the three heroes is actually a girl, and the other two are a black guy and a Hispanic. I also find it hilarious that I think they're trying to set up Rey and Finn as the power couple, but a quick look of tumblr seems like more people ship Finn with Poe and Rey with Kylo. Which I can kinda see the former (there's already posts talking about "the boyfriend's jacket"), but the latter? Why are you shipping the hero with an evil bastard?! Also, it weirds me out that people think Adam Driver is hot, with his weirdly shaped face. Like I saw a tumblr post where someone was doing the whole, Kylo taking off his helmet, "Oh no, he's hot!" Seriously?!
Anyways, spoiler talk! Lot of nice twists though. I think initially, they set it up like Rey was one of the original three's daughter. I mean, she still could be. If she is, hopefully its Luke, because that would be kinda effed up if Han and Leia didn't even acknowledge her as such. Ida know, maybe there's some crazy reason they have to. Its just kinda weird if Han would set himself up to be Rey's father figure and WAS her actual father and didn't let her know.
But yeah, they zigged when you were expecting a zag- Kylo Ren is Han and Leia's son!! And he ends up killing his father! While it sucks that Han died, I think it was a very well done scene- Han seeming like maybe he finally got through to his son, thinking Kylo's talk of having the strength to do what needs to be done is about him getting out of the dark side's influence, but Kylo was talking about finally having the conviction to fully commit to the dark by severing his links to his past and killing his dad. And he does, but even in his dying moments, Han still loves him. And then you have Chewie going nuts and going into beast mode, wounding Kylo and just shooting down storm trooper after storm trooper. And poor Leia! Far away, back at the rebel camp, sensing the death of her love.
The movie ends on a cliffhanger, with Rey finding Luke, presumably in the next movie she's going to get him to try and teach her. Definitely can't wait for the next movie.
Heh, after the movie, we had reservations at Fogo. Heh, since they weren't for another hour, we debated waiting to head over. Good thing we didn't! Leaving straight from the theater we managed to get there just in time! Good eating as always, who doesn't love a Brazilian Steakhouse?
