Better Call Saul- Finally got some Mike backstory, and it was really good! So why were those Philly cops looking for him? To question him about the deaths of a couple of cops- his son's partner and sergeant. His daughter in law had suddenly recalled a heated convo her husband once had, believing Mike to be on the other side of the line. So, she's convinced he knows more than he claims. She thinks her husband was into something bad, which got him killed, then a few weeks later, his partner and the sergeant. So she told the Philly cops that he may know more than he's been saying.
When the cops question him, they claim its a "Hail Mary" hoping he might be able to give them something, anything to figure out what happened to those cops. Now, if you figured from the timeline that the two cops killed Mike's son, and Mike killed them in revenge, give yourself a cookie, you're correct!
But it was cool to see how Mike got that revenge, and his confession to his daughter in law about how and why this all went down was heartwrenching. So how'd Mike do it? It was pretty ingenious. First, he breaks into the cops' squad car, stashing a piece in there (not that we know it at the time). Then he goes to a cop bar where they're hanging out, secretly telling them he "knows it was them", and then getting all drunk and pretending to be trashed.
So as he's walking him, they pick him up all, "Oh, you're drunk, let us take you home!" So they relieve him of his weapon and put him in the back of their car. They quiz him on what he meant by he knows it was them. He drunkedly tells them he knows they were dirty and they killed his son because they thought he was going to turn on them.
So, they resolve to kill Mike and make it look like a suicide. So, he secretly retrieves his hidden piece, and kills the two bastards who killed his son, getting wounded in the process.
But his speech to his daughter in law revealed the sad truth. She found some money, and thought he was dirty, but that didn't change her mind about him, she still loved him no matter what. Mike insists Matt was a stand up guy. The phone convo was about Matt wanting to go to IA about the corruption he had been seeing, the bribes he was being offered. But Mike said that's the way of the cop world. Everyone has a taste, that way everyone's hands are dirty, preventing anyone from turning anyone else in, lest they get in trouble to.
And Mike confessed he did it too, crushing his son. Mike told his son to compromise his morals to protect himself from cops who think they couldn't trust him. So he reluctantly did as his father said. Key word being reluctant. Since he was hesitant, the other two cops thought he was suspicious, and so they killed him a few days later.
Which is why Mike took it so hard. He told his son to be dirty like him, thinking it would keep him alive, but he died anyways- he soiled his son for nothing, and it cost him his life.
So the ep ends with him asking his daughter in law, if him killing her husband's murderers is something she can live with.
